Up the proverbial creek
Anyone with a passing interest in the Lewin Universal plane is welcome to cast their eye over this page and point out factual errors and/or provide additional data. Everyone else is welcome to shake their heads, roll their eyes and remark on what a sad case I am.

Cheers, Alf

Only had a very quick scan, 'cos I've got to go out, but by the third illustration "Tha" should read "The".

Otherwise looks excellent, as usual =D>

Paul

It looks like a nice well constructed plane. Are their many of them in the wild? I know I have seen a lewin here and there on ebay, but I don't think I've seen one of these. It seems like all the combo makers produced nearly stanley-like cutters except sargent

Hi Alf,

Just spotted another typo (well, I know you're into perfection and at least it shows that I read the thing from end to end  ):

Last sentence of the paragraph alongside the first picture - "Thus is weighs......" should read "Thus it weighs......"

Paul

Thanks, Paul - I think... :?

Pete, no, I haven't seen that page at all! Ack, you search and search and still miss the gems... Thank you very much. Hmmm, trouble is I'm seeing dates that are flatly contradicting the primary evidence I already have sitting on the desk in front of me, so how much trust can I put in the rest? :-k Ooo, it contradicts itself too, that's fun. #-o I'll investigate further, and devote a bit more notice to the Tyzack adverts too. :D

Cheers, Alf

That is a really nice and useful page Alf, up to the usual high standards too

I must say that I like the look of the Lewin but having bought one combo, I'm worried about a second and the slope.....

Alf,

In your piece you wrote "And why was it called the Lewin anyway? No idea." Lewin seems to be quite a common surname so I would guess it is probably the name of the bloke who designed it or the name of someone connected to Oxted Mill. Have you been able to do any research into Oxted Mill?

On the question of price I certainly found what you have, that Lewin's go for a bit less than Stanley #45s. When I bought my Stanley #45 about six years ago at an antiques fair they were asking £70 for it (which I knocked down to £45 - well it matched the number of the plane 8) ) and they were asking, if I remember correctly, about £50 for the Lewin.

Well I knew I shouldn't have started this...

The Lewin isn't apparently patented, but on the off-chance I had a goof around the patent office site on in the hopes I'd find George Frederick Lewin had helpfully patented a design for something that was assigned to Oxted Mill Ltd or something similar, but no such luck. So no, I know zip about Oxted Mill Ltd :(

On the other hand I did find I had two S Tyzack adverts including the Lewin and have adjusted the page accordingly. Shame on me for relying on just the ads I'd thought it worth scanning first time round instead of checking again. Also included the link to that article of course.

I'm poised ready for typos, Paul.

Cheers, Alf

Steadily ignoring that outrageous #45 gloat.

Sorry, Alf, couldn't find nuffink this time
Would you like me to out one in for you? :D
Ack. I really, really wish I could say I'd put that typo in there deliberately. #-o

Put. I meant put. The O and the P are too close together. I blame the keyboard. Yeah, it's all Apple's fault, that's it...

Cheers, Fumble Fingers

Alf,
Nice rundown on another BA - thanks!

I dunno if your George Frederick Lewin is any way related to the George Lewin who invented the Triton Work centre (so beloved of DW) but it occurs to me that if you are really serious about your thingy's naissance, you could float a question in one of the genealogy forums.

(Fresh from a success with my BIL's family who have paternal roots in the Sheffield steelmakers)
