A lot of people have suffered a lot of hardship through being flooded and I have counted myself lucky to have escaped.........up until last weekend and it had nothing to do with the rain. We went away last weekend and came back to a flooded Kitchen, fortunately it had not spread to the rest of the house. As you can probably guess it was a stressful week for me and the Mrs, anyway it's all been cleaned up and now waiting for that horrible argument with the insurers about whats to be paid for by them and what i won't be paying for.
Recently I took a lot of time and energy giving the Kitchen a facelift, 24 new solid Oak doors to be drilled, fitted and coated with 5 coats of Danish oil, also the pelmets which I made myself out of Oak, all planed shaped and mitred, again coated with Danish oil, it seemed to take a lifetime but it was worth it when I finished.

Here are a few pics, the damage doesn't look to bad but water and chipboard don't mix.

Got quotes in but they are all quoting for a brand new kitchen, I don't think the insurers are going to go along with that, i'm never that lucky.

We have been extremly fortunate here, but last friday I recorded 49mm of rain in 8 hours. A record. ( i have an electronic weather station setup). http://www.woodyswoodwork.co.uk/weather.htm

Well it was our turn in Herefordshire and Worcestershire...click here for the gory details.

I was travelling from Hereford back home and must have driven down every tiny country lane between here and there. The Mazda RX-8 did stalwart work..despite its' low ground clearance.

Managed to get within walking distance of home and found my last remaining road blocked by a flood but how deep? The last one had looked OK but I had to do a very qucik emergency reverse as it turned out to be deeper than I thought. So off with the shoes and socks, rolled up trousers and waded in...4 inches....no problem. Yeehah... I made it....

..until I got to the lane at the bottom of our drive to find it under 3 ft of water. I could SEE my house but it was the other side of a raging torrent. More foolhardy than sensible I parked the car at a neighbours and started to wade through the torrent....up over my knees and I could feel the power of the water....too scary..too dangerous so gingerly fought my way against the torrent to dry land. So near and yet so far.

This morning ...all gone....on its' way to other poor souls in a far worse condition than me. It's the worst I've seen it in the last 18 years.

I know the feeling well. One of the scariest experiences of my life was wading across a flooded timber bridge in Belize. Only 6" deep on the bridge but very slick and very fast. The creek was normally 25' below. No choice but to cross and every footstep was like a tightrope act as I carried my baby son. Still makes me shudder thinking about it 19 years later!

My wife is holed up in Malvern somewhere. She spent the night in her car but has found a hotel now.

There really is no information as to what is going on. The most reliable source at the moment appears to BBC H&W but even they are only being updated by punters.

The roads that she can't get down in a Disco are still not being announced as flooded! It really does feel like no one is in charge. I rang the local emergency number last night which was advertised having up to date travel info. The person I spoke to was very nice but she had to go off to get a map. For God's sake!

Cheers

Hi Motown, no I use a brilliant and cheap peice of software called WeatherDisplay (written by a new zealand farmer!). My station - which I bought relativly cheaply secondand - is connected to the pc running WD an programmed to upload every 10 mins. It's a fasciating little hobby, but rather like woodworking, theres always something else you "need" I really must update various bits to run in real time - ie live. There are now cheap starter stations out there that WD also works with if anyone is interested, give me a shout.

regards
woody
