I think I mentioned in an earlier post about the polycarbonate roof of my workshop that was previously a garden room.

The light is good but it is very cold in winter and a multi-fuel burner solved that problem.

In summer it goes the other way. It's only mid May and today it was 36 degrees C in there at mid day! Out side it's 21 degrees which for Westray is very hot.

So, we settled for a barbecue instead of working.

Oh, just to get back on topic (forum wise), the stamens for my latest box have just dropped through the letter box so I'll go and apply them then post a photo of the finished box.

The settee is calling me for a power nap/senior moment first though....

I am liking the idea of these 'power naps'. I nodded this afternoon with a book in our conservatory ...................... no not with the candlestick!

36 degrees, welcome to my world. Dont expect less than 30 in my workshop untill late october now, and thats with the garage door up!.
I'm down to working wearing only swimming shorts (and a face mask and goggles) or is that too much information?

I must say if I settle with a book or the radio after Lunch then I don't know about a "power nap", I'm likely to be gone for the whole afternoon (Yeah, NOW you know why I'm such a slow worker!)

High of 40 degrees today in the workshop. Completely unusable.

I'm going to have to make a plan as sunnybob's solution would just remove any doubt that the locals may already have that I am indeed crackers. Plus, I'm not so sure it would solve the problem.

At the minute I'm considering taking one of the windows out (plenty of light through the polycarbonate roof) and installing a ridiculously big fan to convert the workshop into a wind tunnel :D :D

Phil, I'm jealous. We are only just into the 30's.

Seriously though, in your situation you need air con. If this happens every year it will be worth installing a split system permanently. They are not expensive to run if you have a brain cell. keep the windows and doors closed, set it to 25 (NOT 18!) and it will tick over nicely. If it isnt normal, you can buiy portable a/c units that just need a 4" hose to the outside.
Most brits have no idea how to work an air con and set it for stupid numbers.

We have a/c in the bedrooms. I set mine to 27c. Its comfortable to sleep in the birthday suit, and barely works during the night.
My son when he comes from england sets it to 18. It trebles the costs and he has to sleep with blankets. Wheres the logic in that?

I fear the heat load with a more or less transparent roof over the entire workshop will be too high. It would be akin to trying to air condition a greenhouse.

Solar film on the plexi. get the golden tint if you like sunshine, or the black if you like contrast.
But dont underestimate air cons. i've lived with them for 9 years now and they are much more than just a fridge.

I hadn't thought of solar film. Daft really as we had it on all the offices where I used to work.

I'l look into that as a first step.

Thanks sunnybob

Its been pretty arm here today Phill and we have just got back from the vets (Hamish is unwell) and even though the new car has aircon it was still roasting.
Have you thought about reflective blinds for your greenhouse? get yeself some twinkly wool and knit yerself a set! more Larry Lurex than Gary Glitter lol

Cheers
Brian

How did Hamish get on at the vets?

Phill

Floridians I know will be up at 5 am and finished by 10am to get out of the heat.
You could fit in a power nap before lunch if you did that

A cheap and cheerful solution to cut the heat gain is to sling net curtains below the clear roofing sheets using curtain wire to secure them. We used this on a south-facing conservatory and it resulted in a significant reduction in the temperatures.

I'll try that as it sounds like the cheapest solution so far and to be fair the last few days have been rather exceptional. We're back to wind and rain today which of course we'll be whinging about too shortly

Thanks
