There are some very valid points being made on this thread...and all are correct from an opinion point of view because ultimately it is the owner who dictates what they do with tools...they can collect and polish them, use them or both.
What is not correct - again in my opinion, is to have any one "supposed expert" virtually demanding that an owner should do one thing or another which may or may not be the majority view.
We are but keepers of these ancient treasures...they are certainly going to be around a lot longer than anyone who believes they should be used or not...they don't care..they were made to work...some are now retired...some work on with appreciative owners and some sadly end up on the tip.
I had a plan...brought on by a chance bootfair find...to collect woodies of a particular maker...
Until that time I honestly did not appreciate the beauty of these things...did no know how to tune or set them up and certainly did no know how to use them. I was bordering on being just a collector for collecting sake. But without my collecting them originally I would not have understood them and start to use them.
