The last time I watched the apprentice was in 2013 (or around then).
There was a contestant who claimed to think ‘outside the box’. He said he was ‘like an apple pie but when you bit into it, it was full of oranges’

Which of course is an orange pie.

It turns out he was not thinking ‘outside the pie’, rather subverting peoples expectations of what was in it.

The show started in 2005 and was initially an interesting piece of real reality - contestants with some ability given challenging tasks. Now its a show populated by ignorant egos.

I take no pleasure in watching it - and don't.

Were the TV companies to broadcast a show in which the antics of the mentally challenged and inadequate were intended as entertainment we would all (I hope) find it completely offensive. The Apprentice is like a trip back to the freak shows of the Victorian era.

Over the last few years my tv viewing has changed in as much that I no longer watch soaps ( east Enders was the first to ) followed by the others , then anything containing the word celebrity, then island and of course diaries. Add to the mix Hell’s Kitchen, wife swap , married at first sight, 90 day fiance etc etc then comes all the shopping channels that pollute the remaining channels then you suddenly realise there is very little worth watching on tv . Thank god for Netflix and the like like at least you have a better chance of finding something entertaining or educational or even funny ..

When I were a nipper the TV had one channel and would stop showing programs during the afternoon and after about 10 pm. This was because there was not enough quality material to broadcast.

The number of channels has increased, as has the number of hours of broadcast. Sadly what hasn't change is the amount of quality material......

I remember decades ago reading a TV critic saying he'd bought his first Sky (BSB?) box. He said it was great, where he used to be bored with the output of five channels now he was bored by the output of another sixteen.

What is the proper way to refer to black, coloured, people in this strange world we live in.?

It doesn't come up often, but I try to say the guy in the hat, or grey jacket if possible

I work with a chap from Barbados. As far as we're concerned, he has black skin and I have white.

It's more factual.

The argument against 'coloured' (I think) is that it implies a normal/not normal when it's white/coloured. I'm coloured. I'm just coloured in a different way.

Does that make sense?

I understand the apprehension though. It's easy to avoid the issue altogether so you can't be accused of using the wrong term!

I used to watch the Apprentice . I thought it was better when they 'competed' all the way to the end whereas some years back they changed it to have a business proposal but that wasn't revealed until late on. Some of the business plans and ideas were/are awful so they would instantly be kicked out. What's the point in letting them get that far?

It's definitely dramatised entertainment like so many reality shows. If they were good quality candidates would it be entertaining? It's like survival shows and the like - people are chosen for the friction they will cause not being able to perform the tasks well.

Likewise we had 3 channels many years later we had ch 4 . And then ch 5 . As sky tv developed and then freeview etc suddenly the number of channels was impressive. Unfortunately that’s where it all ends . I do recall most of the channels shut down at midnight- bbc 1 / 2 and i think ch 3 went off a hour or so later. Even if I find a decent informative program to watch I cringe every time the adds come on as I’m now subjected to ridiculous adds of more idiots screaming and shouting and making claims that only the insane would believe. So adds come on and volume is muted . Another exercise when you have nothing to do is flick through your channels and count how many programs are about murder or violence , eg couples that kill ,, murder by the sea , teenagers that kill ,,, Britain's worst serial killers etc etc .. yeah sorry- rant over

We seldom watch anything that involves adverts, even the BBC spends as much time advertising itself as it does actually transmitting programme material, and this annoys me. About the only thing we regularly watch live is the news and, god help us, the BBC news channel in between breaks every 15 minutes to self proclaim themselves (adverts).

I do still enjoy both Dragons Den and the Apprentice - the former so that I can mutter at the TV how unprepared the contestants are - the latter, so that I can shout at the TV how unprepared the contestants are.

Almost everything else is streamed content, either iPlayer or Netflix or Amazon Prime.
