George,

Many thanks for the Master class on Saturday. And your generosity with your time & skill.

I think I was there just over an hour & resolved so many turning errors I'd been making.

Am now more confident with gripping with a dove tail.
Jam chucking seems much easier now.
Little & often sharpening rather than waiting until the edge is dull.
Was surprised how little you remove per cut but it is actually faster way of working.

I had a most satisfactory day on the lathe on Sunday taking in all I have learned. Made the ring box and it went with almost no problems (one dig when I got too cocky.

I seriously think you ought to take up teaching as a sideline, you are far too modest about your skills

Well done George.

Jim I bet your eyes bulged when you saw that lathe  I freely admit to looking at 'the numbers' a few times after returning from Leicester. If I ever 'get' this turning malarkey then I would probably end up with one. It's awesome.

Well I thought it was a rather nice lathe

BUT I've been around long enough now to know that what I'm truly envious of, is the bloke's skills.
Not only is his technical ability first rate but for me, his "artistry" would be unachievable, no matter how long I practiced.

I'd echo that. I am turning on a Nova at the club but it is no easier or better than on my Jet mini or the Perform. The only difference is perhaps the variable speed which is useful and the size of blank that I can use. In fact the lack of power on the Jet actually makes me more careful as I can easily stop it with too aggressive a cut and learning to take those small careful cuts is far better than being able to take huge chunks off. The skill factor that Geoge has means that he could go onto a cheapo lathe and still turn beautiful things, I doubt I could go on his monster and turn any better though

Pete
