I think I may buy a large-ish tenon saw and wonder if anyone has experience-based recommendations they can pass on.

I already have a LN carcase saw which currently fills this role, but I think I want something in 14" or 16" length.

Currently considering the Pax 14" from Matthew, the LN 16" (not in the UK yet tho) and possibly Bad Axe Toolworks 16".

Any other suggestions, or experience of the above welcome.

I have the same saw as you Ed and find it ideal. I've tried larger tenon saws at the bench and can't really get on with them (partly because I don't like the closed handle) If I were you, I'd stick with the LN and get something else - Rob

My only experience in that size range is with old ones; not a size I use often 'cos being a weedy girlie I find 'em a bit on the heavy side. But I do have the Wenzloff small tenon from LV, and I'd certainly put the large one on the list for consideration if it's anything like its little brother. Of the ones you list, the Bad Axe is certainly the looker while the Pax's handle looks like it might need some work to avoid blisters. But can we persuade you to the joys of old steel at all...?

Oh, and it occurs you might get more response asking this one in Hand Tools maybe, Ed? Not sure all the neanderthals venture out. :D

Cheers, Alf

My only comment is that I'd love to get a 'real life' review of either bad axe or eccentric toolworks stuff.

Friend of mine is going to try the Atkinson Saws kit from workshopheaven.com. Comes with blade and saw nuts and you make your own handle,

Alf - you're quite right I should have asked in Hand Tools, don't know why I didn't. On the subject of old steel, I would be more than happy with an old saw I just don't have the time, or the right sellers around here to find a good one. Ebay seems a bit of a lottery on this type of thing.

The reason I started looked elsewhere than Wenzloff is because availability seems to be an issue - I've e-mailed him a couple of times to see if he's taking orders again but no reply. There was a promise of a range of Harvey Peace saws from him early this year but no signs yet. Are the Wenzloff ones from Lea Valley readily available from stock?

Just noticed that there is 10% off Bad Axe up to New Year...hmmm

Re Japanese saws, I have tried them but I prefer the Western style.

I'll keep looking.

Having just read a post on the Eccentric Toolworks blog he says he has stopped taking orders. He has 18 months backlog and is re-evaluating how he plans to do things when orders reopen! Not sure anyone will be buying one of his saws for a while.

Ed, as far as I'm aware the LV Wenzloff's are in stock - and I imagine LV would swiftly inform if there was a problem, which I confess was part of the reason for suggesting via LV rather than Mike direct.

Alas, I really have absolutely no idea what's currently in my pile'o'saws or I'd be in here with the sales patter  but I could have a looksee if you're interested. But the Bad Axe is very purty... Whoops, who put that Slope there? Here, let me give you another shove...
