Well after posting this on my business facebook page on the 1st June.

I must have tempted fete..........

as I then proceeded to do this on the 4th June (wed), smashed it through the rip saw, the cut runs from the crease all the way through along the edge of the bone to about 5mm short of the tip, amazingly only flaked the bone and missed the tendon.
The main problem was as it was a rip saw it smashed the back of the thumb out leaving no skin over about a square inch.

Harlow hospital could only do this as it needed special treatment

Charlie followed me around all night thinking I had a sausage in my hand!!!

So left as an open wound until the next day when I was dealt with by Broomfield hospital, regional Plastic surgery unit (chelmsford), initially they were going to do a skin graft but decided in the end to stitch it up (18 I think) and hope for the best, lots of missing skin and exposed flesh. Local anesthetic, makes you feel a bit sick when you can peek at them pulling your thumb about.

This is what it looks like now

I am amazed how little discomfort there is, I went back to work on wed afternoon with the thumb bandaged in a bag and back at work today.
Bit tender and I think It will be bad in a few days but at the moment I just have to keep it covered in cream to keep it moist.

The only good news was I have a very low resting heart beat (i run a lot, bit obsessive, yes I ran on thursday and friday) at 42 BPM, I kept setting the alarms off on the operating table.

I've always wondered how people have these accidents, I've been doing this professionally for years and never had a serious accident, yet in a flash it happened, I'd probably have to put it down to rushing and complacency.

Its times like this when you realise how useful a thumb is -hope you recover quickly.

Its a sobering reminder to be careful everybody!

Robin

Wow! That was nasty!
I`ll remember your injury when I`m in my workshop tomorrow and remind myself that you can`t be too careful.
Hopefully it will heal with no lasting damage.
Good luck.

Ian

These things do happen so quickly, I am so much more careful now than I was 20 years ago. I still have all my digits which is partly down to luck in the early days and now down to teaching and being so much more aware of the students well being.

Good to see you are making a recovery, its amazing how quick you get back to work when you are self employed!

Not nice to see but a good reminder, thanks for posting Bob

Cheers Peter

Oh no, lucky it wasn't worse I guess. I have seen plenty of wounds like this over the years doing tree work, you'll be surprised how quickly it all heals up.

Thats pretty graphic! Thanks for sharing, hope it heals soon and well. The hands are pretty impressive I covered a hand in boiling oil and the nurse thought it had done serious damage. After 3 weeks you couldn't see a mark apart from some redness.

You only had to say if you wanted a bit of sympathy mate, bit OTT to do that ya daft git

Hope it heals up quickly Bob, though at your age it's doubtful

Michael was telling me about this today Bob. I had a sneaking suspicion you were going to post a pic and you did not disappoint

Pretty chewed up, you have been very lucky!

That'll smart a bit.
I was in that state pretty much a year ago with my fingers. Harsh way to learn a lesson but it happened and it could have been a lot worse.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

OWW! Jeez Bob , that looks nasty amigo. Get well soon , and till then , be very careful around anything you might jam it into. Nothing finds a corner of a stove or a door knob quite like an injury. Again , hope you get well soon amigo.

HOLY SH*T Bob! that is a nasty injury. Hope it heals soon mate. As has been said take care of it, it's too easy to catch it on something. I do hope you cleaned the saw bench afterwards? or did you leave that to the apprentice? Get well soon mate.

Thanks guys, I'm still amazed how little trouble it's causing me and very little pain, just a slight throb, I've had more troublesome splinters.
I suspect when it starts to dry up it will cause more trouble.

Crikey oh riley, hope it/you gets better soon ;)
I was doing ring fence work on the spindle yesterday and the end grain was starting to kick a bit. I roped my workmate in for an extra set of hands -I just had a feeling something bad was going to happen but everything worked out alright in the end. That does look quite angry :?

Ouch, get well soon.

A good reminder to us all to be careful.

These things happen very quickly and normally at the end of a day when we are getting tired, I know it is for me.

Mick

Nasty, hope you make a full recovery and no sensation is lost in the end of your thumb!

Just remember, it could have been a lot worse, it could have been my thumb
