Now then, it started off in August looking like this:

...a rather battered T5 dating I 'spose from the 50's or 60's. With a little 'bit' of elbow grease it's now finished up like this:

Blade is a 3.1mm Clifton from Axminster with the two part chipbreaker, 'Y' lever has been extended by silver soldering on some gauge plate, handles and tote in English Walnut. All metalwork polished to 1000g (where possible) and then finished off on the leather wheel of the Tormek. Got myself a bit more organised than the last time...and this is definitely the last time I'm doing one of these :) As ever, constructive comments appreciated - Rob

That is just awesome! Far, far too pretty to use....... I think that you need to dirty it up some :D

Oh, and excellent photography! (So good one does not notice at first).

Regards from Perth

Derek

Big improvement Rob

Does it work well? (note: I didn't ask you measure the shavings    )

Very nice indeed, but my only criticism is that I do think that the head of the screw, on the side cheek handle needs to be flush with top of handle same as the other two.

Fair comment. I didn't have the original side handle so I didn't know what the bolt would be like, or indeed how long the actual side knob and bolt ought to be...this is just my guesstimation of what it would look like. I made the side knob in this shape so that it's comfortable when used in the 'shooting' mode. The side knob is held in place with a 6mm c/s allen key bolt - Rob

What I really like about this restoration is that it isn't just a stunning refurb, it is a re-working - if Record was still making T5s aimed at the high-end market this is what they would be like.

In fact if Record was still making planes at all they could easily market a serious competitor for LN and Clifton. Now that's a nice fantasy...

ooh, shiny - though I can't help looking at the low front knob and the extended high sides and wondering how that plays out. That said, I'm not sure the original looks entirely comfortable. Regardless, it's a stunner.

Very nice job in taking a pity excuse of a plane and turning it into a stunning looking one. I've got little doubt that it would not take a very decent shaving. The only downside would be that it is not original any more, but hey it was nothing before your excellent refurb job making it better than it ever was!

what does it plane like with the new blade/chip breaker?
I knew some awkward person was going to ask me that, which means that I've had to go and retrieve it from its fluffy white towel in the airing cupboard and take it out to the workshop:

It's taking a very comfortable shaving of 0.0015 (one and a half thou, if I've got the correct number of zero's) with a setting on the mouth of about 1.5mm which is about right IMO for a jack. Timber is some spalted sycamore that Chisel let me have a while back - Rob

Seriously, nice job Rob - the new owner will be chuffed to bits

I PM'd the prospective buyer yesterday but he appears to have been offline for a while, so I'll give it a little while yet. If I receive no response from him in a week or 10 days then I will offer it to forum members and if nobody wants it  it'll go on the 'bay shortly after.
Tony - no harm done  , but I 'spose that seeing the evidence is what counts. I think a finer shaving could be achieved with a closer mouth but the sort produced in the pic is fine for a jack and would probably be a bit thicker most of the time, depending on use, of course
...it's back in the airing cupboard now anyway, all wrapped up in its fluffy white towel  - Rob

Yeah, a traditional jack should, have a nice wide mouth according to Chris Schwarz, and that mouth should be just right to hog off reasonable shavings, ready for smoothing :)

I wouldn't worry about using the bay, I reckon there are a few people on here who would happily take that lovely plane off your hands

I have a sneaky feeling that the original purchaser isn't going to reply to my PM from Saturday, so I'm going to offer the T5 to the forum for a while and if no-one wants it  it's going on the 'bay. PM me if interested - Rob
