Well I finally got the fire surround finished ready for some wax. It has been a long time finishing it as I have been using it as a drop on job in between others:

I finished it yesterday and today built this one:

Much simpler in construction with simple lines. The customer is going to finish this one luckily. :D

nice work , mailee..
are the pedestals (uprights) solid or boxed 3 sides(l_l)not sure the correct term?
I ask, as my sister-in-law wants something similar building and i think she would be happy with something similar to yours....if I may duplicate it with artistic license

Thanks for the comments guys. I know we are not getting any younger Dom but with my workload I have to work at a pace to get them all done! I have promised SWIMBO I will take a break after next month so I can get some work around the home done.
Yes Neil the pedestals are three sided with the inner sides narrower to accomodate the marble back plate. No problem about duplicating it it was just a design out of my head mate. As for the plain one it was made from a picture in a catalogue. Original catalogue one was in MDF. Yeuch!

nice work, but is it your photograph because the mantle looks somewhat
bent :?

i would like to work at half your pace, but will have to work up to it i guess.

paul

Love that top one Mailee, the flutes and scrolls really set it of nicely

I can assure you it is not bent Paul, at least I hope not. I think maybe it is as the surround is leant backwards against the bench behind it. Yes Tony I agree with you I too like the look of that one. I am one of the old school who like traditional furniture with all the fancy bits. (Not really vougue now though) I did enjoy making the larger one more for just this reason too.

sure you are right mate,

just a reminder to us all to photograph
certain items level with the top, or looking down slightly to remove the parallex effect. 8)

i agree that the top one looks really decent.

paul

=D> =D> =D> very nice Mailee, when we gonna see you working with some hardwoods, as you could make some lovely stuff !!

Well now that is funny you should mention that Gary! One of my next jobs is to be made in Oak! I have a little Oak that I had been given and am going to make a cutlery canteen with it for someone. I am looking forward to it as it has been a long time since I worked in any Hardwood apart from making some jigs. If hardwood was cheaper I would make everything in it as I like using it and it finishes much better.

I love the top one.

The uprights don't look right on the lower one - possibly could be moved out?

I agree Lukey, the pedestals look too thin for the size of the thing and pretty plain too. It was not my design but from a photograph the customer supplied. I am happy to say that the customer was overjoyed at it when it was delivered and says everyone has commented on how nice it looks :? Oh well, the customer is always right I suppose.

Well perfection has been a cheived at great cost! Here it is finally finished with what I am hoping is the right shade of wax. I finally ended up with some of the Black Bison paste that was recommended to me and this did the job. I picked out the details with a slightly darker stain and think this works well. Just hope the customer likes it.

Hey thanks Bean. I am glad someone has commented on it now it is finished as I was a bit worried it wasn't too good. I am always worried what the customer will think of the finish when I have had problems with it. I guess it is just me worrying too much.

excellent job! From the finished pic it looks aged now. :D
Any chance of a closeup pic of the crown moulding and breakdown of mouldings you used and how they where attached, Please.
Alex

Hi Alex, thanks for the comments. I do not have too many pictures of WIP on this one as I was in a hurry I am afraid. Having said that I do have a couple of pictures of the moulding details but from another job. I make all my own mouldings on the router table. Here are the profiles before gluing together:

I made a frame of each moulding to sit on top of the other and stepped them out if that makes sense? Once all the layers of mouldings were glued together then the top was fastened on. Here is a picture of the mouldings together:
