I bought a Oneway Multi Gauge, dial indicator, to precisely set the height of my planer knives.
Have a Metabo HC260 planer/thicknesser with aluminium tables. When using the dial indicator I do not get a uniform reading across the width of the outfeed table.
I have a discrepancy of 001 inch from one side to the other. Am using a Veritas precision straightedge checking the width of the tables, and diagonally across both. I can see very minute gaps, less than paper thin.
Should I be thinking of a surface grind for both tables?
Cheers

That's 0.02mm. Are you sure that's not just dirt/resin build up on the surface?

It will have to be presicion ground to better that.

Does it work properly? An error of 0.02mm shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I don't think it is necessary to do anything. You might find somewhere that would scrape it rather than grind it.
I think you should set your machine up as best you can and bake that 0.001 into your setting tolerance.
Good luck.

I used to rebuild power station steam turbines for a living. We dealt with extremely high tolerance large components like low pressure rotors I think 0.001 across 8 or 10 inches is a fantastic level accuracy. I'd expect more for a steam turbine bearing but not much more.

No. You're well within acceptable tolerances. In fact +/- 1 thou is a tribute to Metabo.

By the way, the Oneway gauge is a smashing bit of kit isn't it.

I did have some Liberon lubricating wax on the tables I wiped that off, same 001.

What are your thoughts on the Metabo HC260?
Uum, not thoughts on use, as havn't yet. Otherwise I read up on it before buying after I shopped around for best price. I was impressed by the Electra Beckum review, seems build was a clone of the EB. Read a lot of favourable reviews on the Metabo, seemed to be one of the best Planer/thicknessers to choose for the small home workshop. Though some thought an advantage would have been to have longer tables. I'm thinking that shouldn't be a problem, using the Veritas straightedge to line up a support rollers if need to.
Releasing the knife bed to release the knife was a mystery and a bit of a fiddle, the manual wasn't much help, though once have done it and understand how it all works, its a doddle.

Uum, OK as the tolerance isn't as critical as I thought it might be.
Setting up the height of the planer knives relative to the outfeed table. As I say on the outfeed table close to the cutter block I get a 0 reading at the other side I get 001" out, so should I adjust one end of the knives height to make up for this?

I have been trying to figure out the difference between the Metabo and Record. They look very similar, but the record is £100 more
