hi all i need a new chuck i am new to woodturning and need some help witch would be the best chunk to have the supanova2 or the robert sorby patriot hope you can help

Like Paul says not much difference really, I bought the Patriot because it was on offer at the time and have been really pleased with it.

Steve :)

I've got a supernova2, I picked it over a patriot because it came with free pin jaws(dead handy for small diameter stuff) as well as the standard and was £10 cheaper. I got mine new off ebay, well worth checking out, best £130 I spent since buying a lathe.

only came today so not had much time to play with it but it is built solid.

I have a Supernova2, which I got some long time ago. If I was buying now I'd probably get a Patriot, but I don't think there's a lot to choose between them.

Don't do what I did this week - overtightened one of the screws - when I went to remove the jaws the hex socket rounded. Calamity. In the end I drilled into it and tried to use a screw extractor. More clamity and ended up with an impossible mess in the hole, although I got the jaw off. Had to order a new slide from Record. £17 plus postage 3.95 plus VAT!! Still awaiting it - so it's strip down the chuck time........

I have both - one bought alone, one with a machine - both very good, little to choose between ... maybe tolerances on my supernova better because the lock/unlock hex socket works cleanly where the patriot I have to yank free many times ... they are much the same to me ...

I'm looking for another chuck and Vicmarc was high on my list. Any thoughts please?

Brendan

No complaints about the sorby chuck here. The week after I bought it, it was on sale at the S&B show for £110 ! So shop around and haggle. They obviously have some margin to play with there.

Hello Brendan.
I have a Vicmarc chuck, bought it second hand and it is my favourite now, over the SN2.
It just seems so smoother to use :D

What about the oneway - I notice that tool post have recently started stocking them and wondered if anyone had any experience / comparison?

Miles

Hi Miles,
Ive got a Oneway Talon and like it a lot.
I used to have an old Supernova which I think is much better than the new ones but the Oneway in my opinion is even better than that.
regards, beejay

Blister has a couple of OneWay Stronghold chucks and they are very good

Hi,

I have a Supernova2 that I got for a great price about 18 months ago, including the 1" pin jaws, 50mm jaws and screw chuck fitting.. When I bought my CL4 s/h a year ago that came with another Supernova2 so I have a great setup allowing me to swap to the relevant jaws very easily. A great addition is the 4point drive centre that fits in the 50mm jaws.

I don't think there is much difference between the Sorby and the Supernova 2 either in price or performance. In the end it comes down to personal preference and backup from the supplier.

My woodturning club has the Versachuck, that is a bit heavier, being designed as an engineering chuck, but can also take a wide range of jaws. Again I think this is around the same price point, +- £130 depending on current offers.

Hope this helps,

Mike C

I have the Versa chuck
Visited Toolpost shop at Didcott (twice!) & spent some time compareing the three.

Bought the Versa as it came with two sets of dovetails

Later went back for enginering jaws (ins & outs) for extra £30

Good kit. Great, helpful, friendly, no pressure vendor.
