Hi all

I have some questions about a spice rack I'm going to build.

I have a basic image here sorry for the poor quality of my sketch up

Should the shelves be made from thinner stock than the main carcase? Or would you normally keep it all the same thickness?

I want to keep this simple and plain, but how can I add a bit more interest to it? Chamfers, rounding, beading perhaps?

I dont think mouldings would work as its to be wall mounted and nothing else in the kitchen has mouldings.

planned to dovetail the main carcase corners and to set back and house the shelves. Its going to be wall mounted as well.

I intended to h/b dovetail the draw fronts but looking at the sketchup, box joints are jumping out at me?!?!

I only have access to hand tools at present in case that rules out any other ideas.

Any suggestions to improve on the design would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Make it from nice wood and let the wood speak for its self, you could use a light and dark wood. It might need a small up-right at the front of the shelves to stop the jars falling off.

Sorry just quickly helping with the image. If you right click on the FlickR image and select copy image location, it will put the image location on the clipboard and you can paste it onto forum. All you then have to do is remove the ?v=0

what are the dimensions of your design?
I am guessing the the shelves are tall enough to take a standard schwarts type jar?
i would keep the shelves the same thickness as the rest unless i have miss understood the scale of the thing.
also worth incorporating a rail along the front of the shelves to make the little jars a bit more secure.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Yes the shelf heights are based on three schwartz jars high (with some finger room to get them in) and 7 jars on each shelf. I'll dig out the measurements when I get home.

I think the back would be better left open to the wall.

I agree about a rail on the front of each shelf as well.

Thanks for your help with the flickr images as well Wizer ;-)

I think I would consider a back to improve the look, even if it's just coloured hardboard.
How are you going to mount on the wall, steel corner brackets?
With a back, these then would be invisible.

Stick a lip on the shelves: The Seventh Law of Spice Racks says that the fifteenth jar you pick up will nudge the fourth jar which will topple the seventh jar onto the floor.
