Suggestions for web browsers please

I have been using Google Chrome for a couple of years but it's developed a dislike to my computer and plays up all the time unless I reinstall it regularly. I used Firefox prior to Chrome, and can't remember why I ditched it. I only know of these two and IE of course. Suggestions would be welcome with experience behind them preferably.

You almost certainly need a computer clean up programme. It's not the browser, it's your computer.
There are free ones, and bought ones like Norton, Mackeeper etc.

What operating system?

I am running Linux Mint and find the default (Firefox) works well (2 years without a hitch). I do not keep a cache or a history and I regularly bin all my cookies. My better half is less compulsive-tidy, but seems happy (i.e. quiet).

Firefox works reasonably well on my android (Samsung Note 10"). On windoze (at work) I prefer Chrome to IE, but have not tried Firefox yet.

My personal preference is IE
If Chrome is playing up repeatedly, as Jacob says, it's your computer at fault
I am not a lover of cleanup programs though and would be looking at finding the fault myself
You can cleanup your own temp area (enter %temp% into Windows Explorer - you may be surprised at how many files are in there and this can cause 'issues' and is one of the first places I look if someone reports strange things happening) you can cleanup Chromes cache from settings, reset Chromes settings, disable addons etc
There's a whole myriad of things but these are some places to start

And I wouldn't dare suggest that Vista is the problem :wink:

I use Sea Monkey. My last PC was getting old and less capable of running newer software. SM performed better than anything else on it. I just stuck with it when I got a new machine.

Have you seen ccleaner? It's a clean up program available as a free version. If you run that, It might help.

I have used Chrome for years and it's never a problem. Also have AVG and AVG Tune Up running all the time, so this may help matters, but I know very little about computers.

I have done as suggested dm65 re %temp% on the c drive and it's brought up a gazillion entries, some just documents with the letters 'temp' in the title. How do I know what to delete?

I'm currently trying Opera as it was suggested in an answer when searching on Google. Seems OK, but no way of transferring bookmarks and favourites from what I've seen up to now.

Open a command prompt - Start Menu, Run and then type cmd

Press enter and you will get a black dos box on screen

In there, type cd %temp% and press enter

Then type del *.tmp and press enter. you can do this with *.cvr *.html etc, etc

All files are safe to remove though some may be in use, don't worry about this. I also like to do del *.exe just to be on the safe side - none of these exe files should be in use - if they are, you MAY have a naughty file

Keep going till you're down to around 100 files or so and there will more than likely be directories you can remove as well

Sorry about the delay but I've just been using my new sds to remove plaster from my chimney

I use IE at work [no choice] and Opera on my main home machine for web and emails. I'm using Firefox on this laptop as I had some issues with Opera on windows [piece of #%&$] 8. I still prefer Opera, but may move to a dedicated prog for email.

Thanks MB. Do you know of a way to transfer bookmarks into opera? The help guide gives instructions which don't work with the newest version. I've tried downloading the earlier version but it just reverts to the new one.

Sorry, not something I've tried. In practise I've probably got a million bookmarks [ish], all made with good intentions, and rarely use any of them. I tend to keep dozens of tabs open, across three windows. Day-to-day browsing on one window, hobby stuff in the next, then holidays etc. in a third. If I want to swap machines I just send the link via email or across the network.

That's because you're not in the temp directory
