I have a commission from an ex naval officer to construct a traditional fire blank incorporating the Submariners Crest to remind him of his Naval career.

As I had some time free got on and got the majority of the crest made today, a combination of intarsia and carved components - the dolphins being lacewood, the backing is Purpleheart and all other parts were hand cut from some English Boxwood.

Obviously its not polished yet, that will be done once the whole piece is completed - Hope you approve and I must admit had a very enjoyable day making it.

To do that in a day puts my daily achievements to shame, such a range of techniques and all with accomplished skill levels.

If your client is not more than satisfied with the finished item then I can think of a few others that would covet such craftsmanship.

Really fine work indeed. Choice of woods excellent I think... I have rarely known what to do with purpleheart, perfect here as a background. Importand too that it is a really tasteful distillation of the source / reference. Big round of applause from me... why did it take so long by the way?

Absolutely astounding Rog! that is truly a work of art mate and all in a day! Now that really does put my work rate to shame. Fantastic!

Well. That is something sepcial. It will be trerasured for a very long time and be handed down and side ways over the years. Very special work. Excellent. Best wishes to you.

That is fabulous! And such an accurate rendition from the original.

What did you do AFTER lunch?

Truely fantastic.

I know I have said it before but I really learn a lot from your postings and for that I thank you. I know this is your full time job and doing these WIP's must take a fair amount of time, I want you to know that I (and I am sure many others) really appreciate it. =D>

Good grief. I look away from the forum for an hour... and then you've done all this!

I'll just agree with all the comments above and add that your customers are lucky to have you!

What is a 'fire blank'?

Mick

Historically Fire Blanks, similar to screens are put into fireplaces and inglenooks in the summer months when the open fires are not lit to prevent drafts and soot from entering the room if they fall down the chimney. HTH

Thanks for all your comments folks - greatly appreciated!!
