straight router cutters

Apart from jobs needing something particularly narrow, do most people have a huge range of straight router cutters, or stick to one and use an offset (is that the correct term for the hexagonal one) base to widen a groove?

I ask, because I tend to use whatever is in the router for everything, only switching if i need something that is narrower than the current cutter. I see that Axminster have an offer on 5 packs of 1/2" cutters which suggests that they are a regularly used consumable.

Those cutters are specifically for kitchen fitters who do go through them like mad on worktops

Most of my cutters vary in length thats the reason I would change one rather than diameter other than if it was a smaller diameter i needed

I stick to a 12mm replaceable tip cutter unless I actually need something narrower. Although expensive initially, I find these last longer and give a better finish than conventional cutters and the tips are reversible.

Is that for general use Jim- hardwoods etc- or are you carrying out a repeat task (eg kitchen fitting).

Any recommendations on the replaceable tip cutters?

I tend to use the same size cutter for the job, if that makes sense. 10, 12, 18, 19.1 (for veneered mdf) and 25 covers all housings of sheet materials. When one of the larger ones gets blunt it usually gets sent off for sharpening, then gets used for taking out rebates etc where the overall size of the cutter isn't critical. If theres a job that needs a certain cutter its usually cost effective to just buy the cutter instead of taking multiple passes

You'll end up with quite a collection of flute cutters :lol: but after a while you stop needing to buy them

ah that makes sense. I dont do a huge amount with sheet goods, so my collection may grow a little slower!

No, it's just for general use, I don't do much with manmade board either. The one I have is by CMT.
