I've reached a stage I thought I'd never reach... I need a bookshelf

Anyway I'd quite like to build it under the window but I'm a bit concerned it might be a wee bit damp or at the very least make the books smell. It'd be a painted and fitted unit and would have doors which I guess would make it worse probably(?) so my questions are (a) Will it be possible and (b) Is there anything I can do to prevent my books getting ruined?

It's an old cottage by the way and the walls are about 2 feet thick, the bit under the window is enclosed but just a hollow empty space I think, I'm trying to remove the top but it's well fixed :x

what about putting a back on the unit with a moisture resistant membrane between that and the wall. That would stop any damp getting to the books inside the unit.

Also consider allowing some air flow behind the membrane just incase you end up pushing the dampness somewhere else where is can start trouble.

These older places often rely on being able to breathe.

Yeah, you could do that by putting some 2x1 battens on the wall first to allow air to cirulate, and also maybe treat the wall first with something like thomsons water seal?
