Stolen gear

Early this morning (Thursday) my son in law had his van stolen, all his tools were inside, so if anyone is offered any Makita 18v Li-ion tools could you let me know. He's a self employed electrician so there were also several expensive test meters stolen. The Makita gear is a drill, impact driver, circular saw, jig saw and a lot of batteries, some of the batteries had to be 'modified' to fit, so are easily recognised.

Edit - The van was stolen in Morpeth (Northumberland) and last seen travelling south on the A1 towards Newcastle upon Tyne.

My son had his car "broken" in to ( they cloned his key apparently), about a month ago while on business in Manchester city centre. He lost all his camera gear worth £4000 along with ipad and other stuff. Car was backed against a wall, all stuff in the boot, manned multilevel carpark with CCTV and police though sympathetic weren't really interested. They didn't even come to the car, just told him to drive home and 'phoned him the next day.

The vans probably a different colour now, and his gear sold off, they're scum, he's worked bloody hard not only at the business but in supporting his wife (my daughter) and two lovely sons.
I've not been well for some time, hardly been out the house and not done any woodwork, there's been a lot of changes in my life over the past year or two, something we can discuss when we meet up although it won't be in Harrogate, I did try to convince SWMBO that we both needed a break, but when I mentioned the Harrogate show she wasn't too impressed!
I hope your sons camera gear turns up, although I bet he isn't holding his breath either, cameras like power tools are easy to sell on.

It is always so sad to read posts like this, sad and highly annoying. And what can you do to prevent it? I lock my shed religiously every night but I am sure a determined thief could break in. I have been intending to make an inventory of kit but that's a long job, and its not just the cost but the inconvenience, plus some of my kit was my dad's and has sentimental value.

I hope you get lucky and have at least some of your kit returned.

I'm retired now Mike but made a point of emptying my van into the garage every night no matter how late or how knackered I was. It' would always be the one time you didn't that the little b******ds would break in.

In my sons' case with his camera gear, he only left it in the car because he felt in this case it was safer than the hotel and it was only for a few hours.

That's what happened to us - we have a hardly-ever-used side door, only ever when gardening at the back (dustbin is at the side). On the only day that year we used it, it was left unlocked overnight. My camera gear went, and my wife's engagement ring. But the worst bit was the idea of someone creeping about in our house while we were asleep on the other side of the bedroom door.

It makes you wonder how often external doors are tried on the off-chance. Now we never allow any door to stay unlocked for more than the time we're using it. I caught a prowler in the back lane a couple of years ago, checking out my garage. Got a good picture, which the local police were happy to have...

Mike: I'd keep backing the van up! It may 'advertise', but it may just be 'bad' parking - they can't tell and they'll make a heck of a noise finding out.

Either way, it makes things that much harder to pinch.

I found the whole sad episode very traumatic so my sympathies are with you.

The only thing I can say is, don't buy "cheap" tools off of the bloke in the pub, e-bay or anywhere. The biggest problem is that someone somewhere is going to buy the stuff. I once had a £350 camera nicked off me and swapped for a tenners worth of smack, I was more annoyed by the lack of business sense than the theft. I don't condone the thieves but in some respects I think the sober b******s who buy the stuff are worse.

That's the one Ross - if there wasn't a market for it there'd be no point stealing it. Thieving in general is annoying but I particularly can't stand the scum who take away an honest man's means of making a living.

I used to work with offenders. I stopped because I wasn't convinced that the system in this country is set up to make any kind of meaningful difference and it got to the point where working with the criminals felt like a well earned break from dealing with the sleaze balls who manage the thing.

Anyway, I'd be careful, many of the ones I worked with got caught because they weren't too savvy about what they shared and did on social media but I wouldn't be surprised if some are scouring websites like this in order to find easy targets, particularly people offering up details of how and when they secure their tools. They only need took at your post history to find out where abouts you live, what you have available to pilfer, maybe the car you drive and when you're planning on heading to a show for the day.

In our area years ago (it's better now) if you went on holiday, you always got a friend to drop you at the airport/station, as the taxi drivers worked in cahoots with the burglars and informed them immediately you'd gone.
