Well, despite the grief I've returned to, I've had a thoroughly enjoyable day down in Dover at the S&B Spring Show.

The main part of the show was held in an old farm building and was prety busy when I arrived.

Mark Baker was in attendance. He seemed to have a constant crowd around him, I couldn't get close enough to fully see what he was doing. Seems like a lovely chap tho.

The Garden of England woodturning club was in attendance and had a couple of turners demonstrating. They also had a lovely array of work on display

I hadn't realised it til I looked at the pics, but I'd spent most of the day hanging around Les Thorne. I really like this guy and the work he was doing.

Here's a Massur Birch thin wall vase he made:

He went on to make a bowl which I can't remember fully what he did, I think it was gilding cream.

and my favourite of the day was this bowl made from ash, textured with the arbortech, sprayed with ebonising lacquer, then red paint, then black again and finally hollowed out and a gold motif painted in the bottom.

I was that impressed I promptly went off in search of ebonising spray!

S&B's blanks shed is a wonderful place, I was like a child in a sweet shop

I finally dragged myself away and when I got home I found this lot in my boot....

When sitting eating my lunch a guy approached me who'd recognised me from the forums, DaveN. We had a quick natter and he caught me later in the shop struggling to hold on to all my purchases.

On the way back I dropped in to a meet a forum member who'd offered me some Ash logs from a tree he'd just felled. Lovely guy, I came away with a boot load to add to the cause.

What with the weather aswell, today's been truly glorious.

That looks like a great Day out Tom ....
I love that 'Gilding Cream' bowl... thats a beauty ! .... all the pieces are very nice really.. but that one really stands out, for me !

Sounds like a good 'haul' of goodies too ...

The start to a fun weekend !  8)

Good times Wizer...
Bet you need a brake after all that..
Did you get anything to help you with your
project for the competition :?: :?:
Times ticking and there is prizes to be won...

It was a great day - good to meet Wizer!

I ended up spending about £60 - a lot less than I could have spent if I had tried!

Was great to poke round the plank store - now got three planks about a metre long each of Yew 1.5", Sycamore 2" and Beech 3" waiting to be turned into objects!

Picked up a few tips from the chap doing the pen turning and was also watching the other demos for a while!

Nearly went back there today! :p

whats that in the top left of this pic tom in some sort of clear tube? and are they some walnut blanks you've bought?

go on, I know you're aching to be a pen turner. You could do them on the VB

I#m with you on this one George. I admire the pens and the workmanship but just can't see the fascination so many have for them. Then again I s'pose others feel the same about goblets and rustic pieces and I could make them all day if I could find a market for them

Pete

looks like a good show tom - stiles and bates is one of those places ive always meant to check out but never got round to - it being a tad far away - i'll have to talk swimbo into a weekend away in kent.

mind you ive never been to yandles either and thats only just down the road.

Yeh it's worth checking out Pete. I've been to no other turning stores so can't compare it. I'd probably guess it's a bit smaller than toolpost and yandles but I can't be sure. I might take a drive up to Tool Post's open day next month.

hehe I agree to some extent and you're right about goblets. I'll probably turn one eventually but I've no desire to do loads. Different Strokes and all that.

I have a couple of walnut blanks to turn and then after that it'll probably be a while before I do more. These where specifically to use Massur Birch and the others will be presents.

i'm going to that (swimbo and work permitting) so let me know if you do and may be we can arrange to meet up.

have you not been to the kent axminster ? thats worth a look if you are in the area.

yes it's like a sweetie shop, I have been many times. Tho not since I've been turning. I seem to remember that they stock African Blackwood, so a return in imminent.

i wondered who was taking all the photos!!. what a great show for the demonstrators and the visitors, i hope to be invited again in the future. thanks to everyone that made the show memorable. Les

Welcome Les, you've really inspired me with that black and red textured bowl. Watch this space!
