Stanley originally used a right hand thread there, but changed to a left hand thread waaaaay back (1910s at a guess, without looking it up). I think most right handed people find a left hand thread more instinctive.

Quite agree. I doubt if I would be used to it before I'm no longer interested in using a plane.
Two options before I take drastic action.
See if I can use an ultrasonic bath to clean out the threads.
(Maybe) purchase a new adj nut/screw.
