The latest pile of rust to get an over haul is an old stanley no 51/2.
I`ve already done a no4 a while back here...
https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/post482330.html#482330 and this time after seeing an old plane that was brought in to college at a talk about... "planes" (surprise!) I was inspired to try a bit of ABW for the handles this time with a little bit more traditional front knob.

Sorry but yet again in my hast to get this one going I didn't take any before shots!

This time round this one has been fitted with a clifton 2pc back iron and a jap blade which i'm very happy with the results from. There would be some nice shots of some shavings but my battery in the camera ran out!

I do still have a no 7 on the go but the soul and sides are taking an age so this one jumped the que!

Any comments be they good or bad appreciated!

many thanks Edd.[/url]

Very, very tidy, I must say.

Did you replace all the visible screws? They certainly look new.

Thanks Evergreen, only had to replace/add screw at front of tote as it was missing when I got the plane everything else was just given a good shine!

Hi, Edd

Nice one! I like the flat black/shiny finish, very tasty.

Pete

Excellent work. Love the matt black finish and the shape of the new handles.

Well done.

Cheers

You've carried out a very, very nicely finished piece of work indeed. I like both finish and the upward sweep of the rear handle's crown.

-----------

Just a quick question due to curiosity in line with finishing/re-finishing and definitely not a critique.

Is there a legitimate need for the use of high temperature paints? The only reason I ask is because a few old time makers tended toward a fair variety of finishes including the use of cellulose lacquers, stove enamel paints (Record) and shellac mixtures, as well as asphaltum/bitumin (Stanley) based mixtures for their finishes.

Handsome job Edd !
Gary re. paint finishes. I like high temp spray more than acrylic (halfords type) I'm restoring all manner of old stuff - industrial lamps, old tools and machines etc. I'm open to try anything to match the quality of the originals.
Old stock Tekaloid and Japlac have been good. 2010 VOC regs could change everything for the worse

It's a damned nice job indeed. :)

Cheers Shrubby. I'm more a traditionalist myself when it boils down to finishing timber and am not a great fan of acrylics, but seldom touch onto metal fiinishes and simply wondered if there were factors dictating the practical use of high temperature paints/enamels. Japlac was one finish we used to touch onto every now and then when re-finishing old cast ranges/fireplaces (Decorative) during re-furbs, but - possibly having too much time on my hands since retirement - I've been considering re-finishing my old Record hand planes and wondered which direction to go. I'll begin a fresh thread on this topic in the hope of avoiding de-railing this one.

Excellent. Beautiful looking plane.

I must say I love the look of the matt paint. I seems to offset the fabulous finish on the exposed steel parts.

Have you shown your process anywhere on this forum? If not you might consider showing us how its done when you do your next plane. Pretty please...

Regards

Eoin

Very nice restoration!
But only the screw on front of the handle should be replaced with a slotted screw. Philips or Pozidriv screws don't belong on a restored Stanley plane.
Of course that's my opinion.

kind regards

Superb job Edd!

Walnut was a wood I was going to try for handles as I have some offcuts but not sure it's wide enough...will have to see. They look brilliant on your restoration.

The satin black of HT paint is just perfect....Japlac is great paint and I hadn't thought of using that before. I have been testing the "cold asphaltum" and marine varnish mix that Derek suggested....it gives a wonderful facsimile of real Jappaning but it won't dry for me (yet) ....I think I need to simulate Australian "leave out in the sun" somehow.

You have proven that for a few bob (and a bit more on the business end)...you can make these old workhorses worth restoring...can't wait to see the shavings!

Jim

First off let me say a big thank you to all of you for your generous comments and positive remarks!

Keeswillem, I quite agree but it was all I had knocking around until I can get down to the local hardware shop, but fear not it shall be replaced!

With regards to the paint selection, to be honest I can`t remember where I heard about using the HTP but thought I`d give it a try on the No 4 and I`ve no complaints as to its durability and I like the finish I get!

I`ve to do another "plane restoration" as part of my college course soon so I will endeavor to take some pics with that one hopefully they will let me go the whole hog again (I think something slightly less drastic is more common place!)And there will definitely be some shavings soon Jim don`t worry!

The candidate is this rusty old 41/2" so we will see.

and they do turn out quite well...with a lot of sustained grease of the elbow  - Rob

Edd

If you go ahead with the next refurb. it would be a good blog type thread as I feel that there probably a few of us who would like to do something similar and would like some tips.

I know how to get a good polish on the sole and body of a plane using sandpaper/wet & dry/float glass, but how do you guys get even the frog to come up with a mirror polish? Surely not hand wet & dry all those edges?!
