I've been doing some install work for Phil (who shares a 'shop with our own Brad Naylor) - pics later in the week.

I did some work to a staircase at the same house last year for Phil. The family had been undergoing a substantial house renovation/extension. The staircase was fitted by the builders, but the newel/rails/spindles were made by Phil (he's a good turner!), and fitted by me. The posts were made in two halves - the bottom half fitted with the staircase, second half later on with the rails/spindles.

When I left the job, the staircase looked good, but needed carpets, painting etc. So, whilst working back there, I took the opportunity to take some pics of the finished article.

All turning was done to match in with the existing staircase leading to the first floor. The work in the pics above goes up to the 2nd floor.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers

I did wonder about the lathe at Dan's bash last year (Having another one Bradders?)

The turning is not to my taste, but technically very well carried out. But it's all in the installation, eh Karl? ;)

Very nice - you don't often see a cut stringer staircase, over this side of the pond much.

You would be surprised Ive seen loads, most of the big houses in London ive worked on have them. Ive even re-balustraded one near me in Shepperton recently.

While we are on this subject who else calls the string a "stringer" ??

I was always taught at college it was a string and thought stringer was an American name.

Sorry - not up to speed with the terms

What is a "stringer/string" and why is it "cut"?

For me the the "square" parts of the main posts (wrong term) are too heavy - but that's just me.

Wow now that looks absoutely lovely

Definitely need something like that in my house!

Hi JH - from recollection it took about 3 days. Or maybe 2. Can't remember - it was last Autumn.

Cheers
