Stained form.(Fruit Pastels)

Turned this piece of Sycamore which turned out to be a little bland so thought i would have another go with the stains/dyes to try and liven it up a bit.
Never had a clue what to do with it so just used most of the stains from the kit. :?
Hope you like.
The wall thickness is thin,again just messing with the rig.
Edit:- Well SWMBO has just saw this piece and said they are the same colours as Fruit Pastels,so it now as a name :lol:

The staining is very effective, blending in as it does. I imagine it won't be to everyone's taste but I like it. Not sure about that concave curve at the bottom. Ooh I'm getting picky in my old age..sorry :lol:

As you know Paul I'm not one for coloured items but I have to say that I'm gradually warming to this piece probably because I can still see the majority of the woodgrain through the staining that has been done.

In that case PJ needs to try harder, the holes in the wrong end

Right or wrong on the form, convex/concave etc. you have got the flow and transition between them smooth Paul, if you've managed to follow the internals as well you must be getting real used to that rig.

For me too, the jury is still out on staining, but you have done a very good job on this one. As PP says, you seem to have got the blending just right. :wink:

Did you spraying the stain, or with a brush (long haired) wet on wet??

Well the colours have gone down well here with everyone,and have been asked to do some more similar,might even have one to make for someone :shock:

I just used small pieces of rag Ad,and applied the stain with the lathe spinning.Just seemed the easiiest way to get it on and blending into each other.

A nice looking piece, good work!

May I offer the following as information for others rather than a comment on your work?

This piece works very well and the contrast in colours is very striking. If you're looking for a more gradual colour change then a less dramatic 'colour step' (such as red to orange or royal blue to purple) will give a more subtle blending. Personally speaking, I prefer applying the stain with the lathe stopped as it allows me to avoid a linear change over pattern.

Again, this isn't meant as criticism (or even critique really), just as information on alternate methods of applying the stain.

Whats the approximate dimensions of 'fruity' ? ...

Its got that 'come pick me up' look
( i mean in a "tactile", rather than 'kerb-crawlie' way !! ) :lol:

Its a winner.. real 'warmth' to the way the colouration blends together

It is 140mm tall by 115mm wide Alun and about 2mm thick.
