Have been having all sorts of problems with my AOL internet connection recently. I used to run an spyware prog called SpyBot (recommended by a friend) and now there is a much better version called SpyDoctor which costs £17. I've had a little trial with the taster version and apparently my PC is infected with about 150 bugs and other assorted nasties which probably goes along way to explain all the problems I've been having, I have Norton installed but it doesn't appear to be doing allot of good. Has anyone used SpyDoctor and is it any good? If it's not all that good what do folk recommend as a spyware programme that's preferably free and gratis?
Many thanks....hope someone can help 'cos this PC is driving me bonkers - Rob

Personally I think Norton is rubbish. Just my opinion but it has caused all sorts of issues on every machine I have ever seen it on.
Adaware is free and good for spyware catching. Available from Lavasoft http://www.lavasoft.de/
Adaware will catch all the cookies on your machine as well, this may be what the software you're currently using is doing as well. Cookies are not necessarily a bad thing so the hundreds of alerts you see may be misleading.

Hi Rob.

Your not the only one with problems with AOL. My internet connection keeps crashing aswell,,,got so bad a couple of weeks ago that i got a new adsl modem thinking that might have been the problem,,but no, that was ok...seems the signal coming through the phone line keeps going.

Don't know who's to blame BT or AOL???

Aol do their own antispyware program which you can download from them,,,or theres AVG-antispyware,,that seems pretty good,,,down load it from www.filehippo.com.

Best bet is to get 2 or 3 free antispyware programs on your computer,,they will all run together ok,,,unlike antivirus programs,,which you can only have one. so if one misses something, chances are the others will pick it up.

Try ccleaner aswell,,,this little program will help to clean unwanted bits and pieces out of the computer,,,its very good. From filehippo too.

I'm another subscriber to AOL and although their software isn't the most compatible around, I've always found the connections reliable.

Oh, and I use Adaware, AVG, ZoneAlarm and ccleaner too :) .

AdAware is really good. Another anti-virus (recommended by my son-in-law who is an Internet security developer) is Grisoft AVG. Also free.

I'm getting rid of Norton when my current subscription ends (came with the laptop). Years ago it couldn't be beaten, but nowadays it misses too much and is compute-intensive - slows everything down too much.

I used to have AOL on a previous computer but didn't think much of it. When I went to broadband I chose Tiscali and it has proved virtually trouble-free. When the anti-virus which came with my present Dell PC expired, I downloaded AVG which is free and recommended by most computer people that I trust.

Cheers

Thanks for all the replies, will have a go at downloading a couple of them and see where it gets me.....tend to agree with Paul's sentiments about computers, just need to put a 'puter underneath the mallet (hammer) ... :D - Rob

To update, Norton and all its worldly goods have now been put thru' the cybershredder and I have Adaware and a suite of 3 programmes from Grisoft AVG...the free antivirus, the rootkit and anti-spyware (30 day trial, not free) running instead. 'Puter now appears to be running much better so many thanks for all your help - Rob
