Hi All,

Just reading Novembers woodturning, and theres a letter re advice trueing up logs, to put down the rouging gouge, and use a spindle gouge, due to the strength of the roughing gouge tang, and the stresses of trueing up unround logs,

Wondering what you guys ( and gals ) do on here ?

i've so far just been coping with the turing air when necessary - but i'm going to leave truing with a spindle gouge till i hear more.

Hi Loz,

I would use a roughing gouge. I have had a rouging gouge break at the tang once. I should have moved the tool rest closer long before and I got a big dig in. Next one I ordered was an Ashley Isles tool. This is made of a much thicker steel and I've never had another tool break since. Also if the tool rest was closer then again there would have been no problem

roughing gouge definitely - i snapped a spindle gouge once truing up (and embeded the broken end in my palm - not to be reccomended) - if the rougher isnt man enough for the job i sometimes use a round ended scraper.

but my top tip is to use the chainsaw and bandsaw to get it as round as possible before it goes on the lathe in the first place
