Hi all,

Just fitting a couple of stair cases as a favour for someone and trying to get my head round spindle spacings. As I understand it you should not be able to push a 100 mm sphere though the gap. So maximum gap 99mm, is that correct. If you have a turned spindle does this mean that you cannot take the gap measurement from the square section of the spindle as this will make the gap of the turned section (or parts of it greater than 100mm).

Does this all seem sensible.

Also does anyone have a link to somewhere that gives a basic formula for measuring the spacings.

Thanks all.

The 100mm space must be measured at the widest Part of the spindle regardless of shape (usually the turned section)
There used to be an Inspector from Rugby Area that (He brought a new meaning to an anal pencil pusher) insisted on checking each spindle on a plot that i had worked on
He actually carried a semi sphere on a baton
I did get my revenge as I asked him for his calibration certificate after he had completed the lower flight   and unless he produced it he was not allowed to use his device and instead would have to use his tape measure . LOL
Funny the way he stormed off vowing to stop me from working (hammer) (hammer) To this day I've never met him again LOL
