Spindle moulder cutter blocks

I know Its no woodwork but its a tool that's going to be doing some, so I will keep the updates going on this, its nearly done.

Well after checking out the prices of the knobs and levers expensive or what for what they are, plus the ones I wanted they are out of stock till the 6th Nov. As the weathers not be nice to get out today I decided to get on and make some, I got 4 knobs turned on the lathe done and fitted.



I actually think they going to look and function a lot better than the modern ones I originally wanted. I think for the ones that lock the main hood down I am going to make some t-handle type ones.

If you are buying mdf specifically for the fence setup, buy moisture resistant.... and if possible, either medite or caberwood pro, not the cheaper bog standard stuff.... the extra few quid is worth it.

Here you go kev t- handle bolts, done and cut a hole for the extractor and made up some ducting. Apart from the hold dows and a bit of paint its done. Using some old mdf til I get some of the moisture resistant stuff


This will probably be my last post on this, so thanks to all the tips and comment.

Cheers Kev yes I have seen that image some ware before, I am looking into making a power feeder when I get time they dont look difficult to make. If I make one I will let you know.

Just to round off this post
I made up the arms for these shaw gaurds

I think they are a bit ott but its all I had to hand, on a positive note they are rock solid though lol. I have a bit of fiddling and tidying up on some of the metal work but I I think I have more or less finished the pressure shaw guards. In the end I used hard wood and springs as had plenty of them,



I hope it will work, I did try using bandsaw blade but it kept snaping every time I tried to bend the ends

Yep if you get round to doing a power feed I'd be very interested to see how you go about it. The cheap one ( think it was called an m3? Apparently is very weak. The guy i bought my spindle from had bought one, it died within a week, got a replacement under warranty and that died quickly too. He then spent 500 on a maggi steff which is a whole load better.
I think the baby comatic is 90w? I might have made that up, but they arent powerful motors. Feed speed control is something to consider

Hi Kev I have ordered my limiter moulder block that should be here next week, I went for a 120mmX40mm in the end staying safe.

Today I did a bit of rummaging in fathers sheds and I think I have found the perfect motor for what I have in my head for my power feeder build.



I pulled off the pulley part and its got a useful shaft on it



It also has a Parvalux gerabox drive which is a bonus as they do have a quite a good brand name



Electrics and motors are not my forte if they work great if not find something else, but going by the label it looks torquey enough though and as its 12v I should have a speed controller about, as I think I bought a couple when I motorized my rotary table. If I am not mistaken the motor come from a disabled vehicle winch for pulling wheel chairs up the ramps. I think I have seen them come up on the fleebay now and again for no money. Will keep you posted once I have a few more bits and bobs up together.

Little update on the power feeder build, I had the feed rollers arrive today. I have gone for the 120mmX60mm ones, as I picked them up cheep off the fleebay site. I am also on the lookout for a piece of steal plate 5mm thick for the main frame,

spent a few hours last week sorting out some cogs and other useful bit to start building this power feeder, then this popped up for sale at a very reasonably negotiated price.

I picked it up today and it has notbeen used for a long time, so Monday I shall start stripping it down as I bought it spares or repair. For the price I paid I can use it for parts, fingers crossed though it may work, I am ever the optimist. Fingers crossed I am hoping the wheels I have bought will fit the spindles.

Either way it will save me a lot of time making parts

Just a thought - using it pressing down towards the table then using it to press horizontally against the fence involves reversing direction. Could be missed as it's not immediately obvious!

Hi all since getting the power feeder back its been cleaning de-rusting and un-siezing the clamps and slides, I have bolted it to a lump of timber at the moment that way I can move it about while working on it, I actually like it and I may make something similar to use permanently, as it would make switching the feeder between table saw and moulder much easier.

It had obviously been sat out in the rain judging by the amount of water that came out of the switch gear and electric motor so I gave it a basic clean to get every thing moving, as I really wanted to find out if it was a worker or not.

It works, I finally had it running although the bearings where understandable noisy. Now I know it a runner the first job was to pull the motor apart give it a good clean and get some bearings on order, brill £17.71 for the pair its a no-brainer.

While the motor is all stripped out I decided to give all the gearing and spindles a good clean of old gear oil and grease and check for ware in the shafts, I was very surprised to see none.

I have found the other gears tucked inside the side panel, that makes it an 8 speed 1Hp forward and reverse feeder that’s a bonus,

I wish I had taken more pic before I started the cleaning, you couldnt imagine how messy it was. I tend to get stuck in and then remember, lol The spindles are running a lot easier its amazing how much resistance old grease makes. Its is all in bits now waiting on new oil for the gearbox and the bearing to arrive but its had a good clean and I reckon its going to be a keeper.

I may pull the stand apart and give it a bit of a polish on the lathe if I have time.
On another note the good news is the wheels I bought for the feeder build fit this feeder.

While waiting on bearing I decided to make up the wheel cover that’s missing. I had an offcut of 2mm sheet. I folded the edge and


put it in the shrinker



which pulled the shape round nicely.

I cut some fixing pieces which I welded the cover to.

Once I was pleased with the shape I trimmed the ends to suit,

I gave it a shot blast in the cabinet to clean and give it a good keying for some paint.



Once the first coats dry I will give a rub back and give it a another coat.
Overall I quite pleased with it.

The good thing about waiting on parts to arrive it holds one back to get other things done. Yesterday I got the final coat of paint on the wheel cover, made a lift handle, I was going to buy one but hate waiting plus most of the ones out there are plastic and I am tight



Also yesterday I got the spindle moulder and the saw table drilled and tapped ready for the feeder foot to bolt down, as I have decided not to use the wooden plank it is on at the present as its not a good fit on the moulder.



There was a bit of a bonus yesterday as when I arrived home last night, there were the new bearing sat inside the front door.


This mornings drive was to get it all back together. It all went together very well and now with the new bearing and new gear oil its now running like a new machine real quiet.

To say I am chuffed would be an under statement, I am very very chuffed especially with what it cost and what I have spent on it.

Well done, looks fab! Youve got a lot of kit available!!! Theres a maggi 'foot plate' on ebay at the mo. If it fits yours, you wouldnt have to unbolt the whole thing each time......

Cheers Kev I have asked them what size shaft it takes. Thinking on it though the feeder will probable live on the moulder and only moved to the table saw for specific jobs as I can envisage having a foot bolted to the table saw would obstruct the workspace if you get what I mean, I can see already the table sledge isn't going to work with a foot bolted there
