Cannot believe the size of some of the house spiders in my garage, started ripping a few bits of old plasterboard off that I stuck on the sealing about 12 months ago and nearly died of shock! not a massive fan of them cus of the mess around the windows and stuff. But neva seen any that size. I bet a good 3 inches. My neighbour says its cus we have a condenser dryer and also a fridge freezer in there, apparently something do with the warmth/humidity and also food source for them, don't know how true it is?

When Ive sorted all out and boarded and painted the floor, id like try keep the mess of webs etc. at bay. Has anyone got and experience of using wall plugs that have ultrasonic sound to scare them off?

I think there's very little evidence that the ultrasonic units actually have any effect - other than to irritate dogs; I've tried some chestnut extract spray sold for the purpose, can't say that it works, but it smells nice...

Maybe the ultrasonic units are ineffective because it is understood that spiders hear with their legs (http://www.wired.com/2011/12/spider-leg-hair-hearing/) and have an effective range of 40-600Hz, the other end of the spectrum from the definition of ultrasound as greater than the upper limit of human hearing range at 20kHz; an alternative explanation of arachnid hearing is given below.

The Truth About Spiders
There was a scientist working away in obscurity for years with peculiar experiments on spiders. After years and years he placed an advertisement in several academic journals to let the community know he was about to host a live show to demonstrate his findings.
At the event hundreds were there more out of curiosity than anything as the details of the findings were kept secret. The man himself wandered on stage and silenced the murmurs.
‘Today I will demonstrate two things. The first being that spiders can understand and respond to basic commands.’
The crowd laughed and jeered but undeterred he opened a box on his desk and a spider crawled out.
‘Spider, walk left’
The spider moved to its left. The crowd was silenced.
‘Spider, move right.’
The spider moved right. The crowd gasped. Forward, backward, the spider responded again and again. The crowd applauded in awe.
The scientist then removed all of the spider’s legs. The crowd, confused by this, watched in silence.
‘Move left’
The spider didn’t move.
‘Move right’
Nothing. Forward, backward, no response.
‘This is to demonstrate my second finding. Once you remove a spider’s legs, it goes deaf.’

Ha thats nothing i use the spiders in my workshop in place of wheels to move the machines around :D

Spiders can also be used to entertain and supplement the diet of household cats. Bit yucky when they've finished playing and crunch down on them though
