Hi all, a little while back I was testing whether it was worth my time restoring some old school tenon saws. The department has a mix of about 25 spear and jackson Dovetail or tenon saws that are in a pretty terrible state.

I took one home, spent a few hours on it and was pleased with the results.

An elderly neighbour offered me an old saw that she said had been in the shed "forever" when she gave it to me I was pleased to see it was in pretty good condition but I set to work.

I believe it to be a Mermaid Brand skew back saw but if anyone else has another idea please let me know.

The red collar around the S&J medallion inspired a rapid and quite fruitless search revealing the fact it was a double century saw. However most pictures I saw had different colour collars and so I am wondering if anyone has info about the different colours and what they signify?

Some medallion references at backsaw-dot-net Spear and Jackson Medallions Looks like red collars replaced green ones (or same/overlapping period, both stating 200yrs experience), with black ones before that stating 180 yrs experience, replacing the first brass ones stating 160 yrs experience(which replaced earlier paper ones)

That's really helpful, I'll take a look at the link.
