I need to buy some form of space heater for the cottage while I'm working there. It's been suggested that one of these is a good buy.

Assuming that this is so, I can't really decide on which size to go for. Tank size isn't an issue.

The 50,000btu is the cheapest and works out at around £5/1kbtu. The 79,000btu works out at around £4. The 89,000btu is a no-no as it's relatively much more expensive then the rest. 96,000btu isn't much cheaper than the 79,000 one (at £3.79/1kbtu) and the 150,000 is very good value for money at £2.74 but does cost a lot more.

I kind of swing in favour of the 79000btu but haven't really got much feeling as to whether or not it will poke out enough heat. Of course, the 50,000btu is even more attractive from a pure outlay perspective.

Currently the cottage is an open box about 12m x 5m x 6m high.

I'm told that the heater will run on red diesel quite happily.

Any thoughts?

Hi Roger,

They are great for pumping out heat quickly, but they also pump moisture into the atmosphere... would that be a problem in the cottage.

Sounds smelly as well !!

I did think about the moisture and asked John (my builder chum) about this but he reckoned it wasn't a problem. There's enough other smells that my nose won't notice something else

They do produce a lot of heat, but in quite an intense way.
Not bad on fumes at all, especially when they are new. Keep an eye out for the fuel filter, and when they run out of fuel, they become very fumey then. Diesel runs them fine. 8)

Hi Roger,
they certainly will heat things up , but some are smelly !!! :(
Andrews heating (cant find there web site just now )
do a propane one that dosent smell at all

Hi Roger

They really do stink to high heaven. For less smell go for a propane space heater, but whatever you do try to get a unit with a regulator which allows you to turn the thing down - there's nothing more annoying than continually having to start and stop an over large heater

Used to called Andrews Heat For Hire (as in Russell Brookes)

Cant you just use a large oil filled electric radiator and keep it close to hwere you are working?

If its a open box a large heater will be trying to heat the world so i suggest the smallest heater in the range (nice and portable)forced air ideally to be sited at the point of need and only run as required hiring in should be considered as once the box is closed its a completely new heating situation.
