and have lots of Jaws to add as and when needed

Any prefrences on here ??

I'm quite happy with my Axminster K10,also like the look of the Axminster Super Precision chuck.
Based on what I've read, the VersaChuck and Supernova are both well recommended as well - just to make sure your choice isn't easy

Andrew

Does the Supernova have indexing? I have one and haven't sen any reference to it in the manual, it'd probably have to be a seperate purchase

If I'm wrong could someone let me know so's I can have a fiddle with it.
Pete

id have to vote the Supernova, I've given mine some stick over the last 12 months and it's still good as new, versitile and reliable. Never had a problem with it (touch wood) 8)

I've voted 'other' despite having 2 supanovas...

The Axminster super precision is a substantial chuck with interchangeable back plates (not cheap) should you change lathes at any time.

Do check that Axm have the range of jaws that you might need... although I have an Ax S P I use the supanova/record most because they have the long nose jaws which Ax haven't added to their range (afaik).

Another vote here for the Axminster Super Precision - which I use. Very well engineered and a pleasure to use. Replaceable insert, indexing ring, pages of jaw sets - not cheap, though :(

Come and try mine, if you want to! :)

Ray.

I voted for other I prefer Vicmarc chucks I like the jaw pattern and I have 3 VM-100 chucks.

I do however recommend the supernova because it is good value but the Vicmarc chucks are coming down in price

to fit the thread size of 1 1/2 x 6 you are better with a direct thread Supernova or go for the VM120 which is a beast of a chuck and excellent for large work

vicmarc gets my vote, i only have the vm 90 but i got it third hand an it must b donkeys years old now as i had it and my lathe in storage for bout ten yrs b 4 i started turning bout 18 mnths now. and it is still rock solid!

Just had a thought Blister.....with all that humngous amount of kit you got hold of it's taken you just over a month to need something. :D

Pete

Best chuck? More than one I think.

Oneway Stronghold for the heavy stuff.

Vicmarc 100 for its versatility, especially the long nose and pin jaws.

Beall collet chuck for its precision and holding capabilities for small spindles.

I voted Multistar despite only a few weeks ago buying the Supernova. I really wanted the Titan as it is so well made and, once you have bought a few jaws, about the same price as the others. Unfortunately, I was overcome by a spending frenzy in WL West's and the Supernova was on the shelf. I feel a bit guilty as I really should support British manufacturing. The Supernova is, of course, a very good chuck and mine does have indexing. I could probably be persuaded to part with it (along with the 25mm pin jaws) for a reasonable offer

Another vote for the Ax Sup P.

I have 2 Ax, 1 x nova and the 120 Vicmarc. All good but I use the ax 95% of the time.

Axminster gets my vote, had a Peter Childs on the perform lathe, limited fixed jaw options.

Chris.

Blister.
I couldn't really say which chuck is best as i have only used the SN2.
Looked round on net and on here and thought it was the best one,but as i say can't really tell, can't compare.
Very plesed with it though.

I bought the Axminster super precision. I read about lots of chucks and got more and more confused. Axminster have a deal with the chuck and a few sets of jaws all bundled with a case with foam inserts. The price seemed quite good that way so i stopped comparing and just bought it.

It runs true and does what it is supposed to so it will do for me :)

Can't say the case is worth having but it was still cheaper for the bundle than just buying the chuck and jaws.
