If I purchased the Perform CCBL lathe,or any lathe (see other posts) can I use it "straight out the box", or do I also need to buy a chuck first???

Turning tools are not a problem, LOML bought me a set of "chisels" of Crimbo last year,
only they turned out to be 8 pc bowl and spindle set from Record,
still bless her little cotton socks for trying :D

So the real question is DO I need to buy a chuck for a lathe before using it???

sorry again for asking some really obvious questions, but their only obvious once you know

Chuck not essential, the machine is supplied with a basic drive centre for spindle turning and a faceplate.

So although not as flexible or as convenient as a good scroll chuck more than adequate to turn spindles and bowls, just a little more effort for bowl work thats all.

Thanks CHJ,
i should blame YOU really for all these "dumb" questions, afterall it was your work that started this bug for me, after seeing all those wonderful turnings in your gallery.

so, if you want to blame anyone fellas, blame CHJ :D

Why not  I get blamed for most things these days it seems, as if it's my fault the last load of washing came out sprinkled with sawdust.

Glad my over indulgence with posting has encouraged someone else to have a go, there are other more accomplished turners lurking on this forum I'm sure, just that they do not burden everyone with their output.

I'll second that - always amazed at a) the quality and b) the quantity of pieces Chas produces :D (and his photography is better than mine as well :( - but it's my birthday soon, must hint for a new camera [-o< )

Also agree that you don't need a chuck to start with - I think it better to concentrate on technique first;a chuck can then be added later.

You may be planning this already Neil, but before you start firing everything up, take a one or two day course with a good turner. You'll never regret it and it will get you into good habits and techniques which you can then practice and learn from. It will also help you avoid some of the more drastic and dramatic errors when you're first starting #-o

I shouldn't worry too much about that - if I remember correctly, Record's 8 pc bowl turning set is just their 6 piece spindle turning set with a couple of bowl gouges added.

You should have everything that you need there to get you going.
