A couple of questions that have been bothering me and which I haven't been able to find answers to:

What makes a chariot plane - it looks like a block plane, but what makes it a chariot?

Similarly, what is a badger plane and how is it different from a chariot?

TIA

Chariot planes are small block planes - I think because of their particular shape. They are normally pretty small, too. Think 3 - 4 inches long.

A Badger is something very different - a Jack plane with a difference. The iron protrudes all the way to one side of the plane like a rebate plane. This allows you to use the badger to make large rebates although the main use of the plane was to raise panels.
Most badgers also came with a skewed iron which is a great help when working across the grain.

Hope this helps
