One of the things I want to make is a box for my wife to put her knitting needles into. This will consist of a number of compartments that each take a set of needles of a certain size. In order for her to know which compartment is which I want to put the needle size on each compartment.

My question is what is the best way of doing this. My first thought was to use a small brass plate (5x15mm) with the size etched onto it, but I am not sure where to get such small etched plates from.

My other thought would be is it possible to use a light coloured wood and put Letraset onto the wood and then put a lacquer over the top.

Any ideas?

Virtually any trophy shop.
All size plates, brass, chrome, coloured. etched in most common type fonts.

I know this is a woodwork forum, but since I've done something similar in the past I thought I'd chirp in. At first I was also eager to make a wooden item to store all the knitting equipment and supplies. We actually have a wooden box now for this but I didn't make a particular compartment for the needles I began to think that was over complicating the thing from a design and use point of view. Instead we sewed our own 'chisel roll' style holder for them with a ribbon so Mrs. Robinson could tie it closed. Makes them much more accessible during use and more compact for carrying around while still keeping them organised by size.

Just my 2 pence

SWMBO uses DPNs a lot and she never puts them back in sets, so whenever I go to try to find some needles I have to get the gauge out to check the sizes of about 50 needles to find a set all of the size I want. I figure that if I mark the compartments then she might be more inclined to put them back when she has finished them ;)

She already has a chisel style holder for the longer needles, but has been wanting a box to put her various bits and pieces in for a while.

I only have the brown plastic, but if they are any use I would do them F.O.C as long as you didn't want hundreds :D :D
