Small boxes

Made these this afternoon from a piece of oak gate post, mainly because I wanted to try out the wire wool in vinegar thing on some oak to see how well it coloured it.

This one went black....

Got hold of a different grade of wire wool from the packet for this one and the steel must be different,it went blue!

Good to see you experimenting, oak not an easy subject to get the small detail needed for boxes.
Think I would prefer to see the Oak in a natural state for a small items like these, leaving staining as a contrast tool on larger items, but I wouldn't have considered the difference without you having tried it.

Oak is not a good wood to try this sort of thing with but you have got a good finish on the detail . Do you know Cindy Drozdas work? If not have a look at her web siteds for example of these sort of boxes. She's the expert and has a number of different styles. Can I suggest that the finials should be a bit slimmer, not easy in oak I know.

Nice shapes,nice colours.Like it because you can still see the grain through the stain.Are the pictures taken on some of the original fencepost?

I like pieces with a bit of body in them J T nice shape and finials look just right for the body of the piece. Not sure about the staining though, I like to see the grain coming through,especially with oak. Nices pieces. REgards Boysie.

Like the fact that you have 'dared to be adventurous' in trying something like these ... and I reckon they've worked out pretty well.

Steve, they don't really smell after two coats of sanding sealer and wax

Good use of some old fencepost.

I prefer the first - the black one. In my view the finial on the second is a little thick and seems out of proportion to the rest of the box.

I do not dislike the colouring, and think it does show off the grain very well. I am insure about the unstained bit left on the stem of the second box.

I would be happy if they had been mine.

Just personal preferences -

I like the first box better, have to agree with earlier comments about the thickness of the finial. Like the staining effect, seems to give a very even colouring.

Cheers Dave and Mike, I still like the second one best , the finial is big and bold in comparison to the box but that was the plan, the box is tiny and just about big enough to use as a ring box, as in one ring. In the pic,the post it's sitting on is a bit shy of 3"x3" so you can see how small the box is.

Mike, the colour isn't so even on the first box, I didn't give it long enough to soak in and when I finished over the top of the stain I've streaked it a bit. On the second one I was fairly generous with the liquid and went and had a coffee whilst it soaked in, the result being a very even staining of the wood.

Shapes are fantastic, buti'd say you could kill someone with that finial !;-)
