Hi all,

Does anyone have the Record Power set of Cabinet Maker Chisels?

The set comprises: -
12mm Right Hand Skew Chisel
12mm Left Hand Skew Chisel
10mm Corner Chisel

RP say, "Made from manganese chrome steel for superior edge retention and featuring white hornbeam handles."

Or does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks,
Neil

Yeah - I suggest avoiding them where possible. Seriously, they're horrible things to sharpen well, and are rarely better than just making two cuts with a decent normal chisel.

Don't see the point. None of these chisels are necessary. So if you're buying them, it's because you want them, not need them. In that case, it only makes sense to me to buy ones that are nice to look at, with at least a brass ferrule rather than a bit of nasty pressed steel.

Hello,

A pair of skew chisels come in handy form time to time. Certain joinery, like dovetailed rails into table leg tops and the like, almost require a skew for cleaning waste from the corners. A corner chisel is not something I have ever had the need for, though. Just grind a couple of 3/8 in chisels with a skew yourself, it doesn't have to be acute as the ones you buy. Forget the corner chisel.

Almost require ? Assuming the dovetail is not steeper than 1 in 6 (?), a straight 6mm bevel edged chisel will result in overcutting a lapped dovetail by 1mm at worst in an area that can't be seen, whist avoiding picking up two extra chisels. Still don't reckon that makes them anywhere near necessary.

Hello,

I did say almost, but having a pair would not make me want to do without them. Anyway, you'd only be picking up 2 extra chisels of you assume you cut the whole joint with a 6 mm chisel, which you would certainly not have.

Skew chisels are handy to have, corner chisels not, unless you are in some sort of production setting, squaring up routed mortices or something al day long. Might be a slight time saving there, but probably not.

No no no ! If you need a tool, something functional will do. If you want a tool that you don't need, you should look for a beautiful one to maximise your enjoyment in just looking at it and fiddling with it.
