Does anyone know if it's possible to use router bits on an SIP spindle moulder. It can run at 1800 rpm but the spindle is too high to use a chuck / collett without a stub or adapted spindle.

I think 1800 rpm at it's fastest speed is ok I do use this speed on my vari-speed router and it seems to work Chems. Giff
 
I'd have thought that was no where near fast enough based on this info on the big triton I have:

The variable speed is controlled by this thumbwheel built into the motor cover. It is numbered 1 through 5 for reference, although speed changes are stepless. The reference numbers approximate to the following RPM:

1. 8,000
2. 10,000
3. 14,000
4. 18,000
5. 20,000
 
Sorry Chems you are right, the top speed on the moulder is 9000rpm, I think I missed a nought of in the 1800 and thought is was 18,000 ! Is 9000 too slow for smaller cutters ? .. Giff
 
The smallest cutter I use in my Triton is a 6mm cutter for doing drawer bases, and I normally run that around 3, any higher an the torque bends the bit and any slower and it doesn't cut well.

I'd say with panel raising bits or large biscuit type rebating bits you'd get away with 9000rpm but probably not for straight bits.
 
Thanks again. I think that answers the question and I will stick with the router. I am copying a template with a 1/2" bearing router and the stock is 2 x sheets 18mm ply and it can be a bit slow. I take out the straight sections with a rebate cutter on the spindle and it whizzes through. Giff

Have you considered getting a bearing for your spindle moulder such as these http://www.axminster.co.uk/omas-omas-be ... rod824640/ You can match the bearing up to the size of your rebate head to create a large bearing guided cutter. Only drawback is that you are limited to a cutting radius the same as the block so its not very good for intricate work.

Yes I am using a large bearing on the rebate block which is really good. Then I have to use the router as the template has a lot of 12.7mm radius's (?).
That's why I was wondering if I could do it all on the spindle but it is probably too slow..
