That's a super lead Steve.

Wizer, not much point calling Craigmore now, that's a better price.

Tommo, thanks, I make those little videos for my kids who are working in Kent now and to try to put back a little of what I've got from YTube.

Mine needed a bit of fettling and I chucked the blade for a Freud. Not looking to replace it so I must be satisfied!

Roy.

What sort of fettling Roy? Just squaring and aligning or something more fiddly?

Hi,

I have the saw and i am very pleased with it. Very quiet imho and very accurate.
Mine needed a bit of fettling as well when i got it, it just took me a minute or two to get the riving knife and all set up perfectly.

My saw was second hand and i can't do anything but recommend it!!

regards,

michael

The riving knife did not align with the blade wizer, but it is adjustable, the L/H mitre slot had a two thou taper so jigs tended to jam, piece of wood and some wet and dry sorted that, the blade insert was useless as it was above the table at the front, made a new one with zero clearance.
I also added a short sub fence.
The worst problem was that the blade and mitre slots were not parallel, but again the arbor is adjustable.
I found that the saw was well made but badly assembled IMO.
Setting the riving knife would challenge the patience of a saint as it has four screws that adjust the knife in all planes, so any alteration in one plane buggers it in the others.
Took me several hours to get it right but it has never moved since.

Roy.

Thanks Roy and Michael,

I'm pretty well convinced that this is the saw for me but I'm also wrestling with the table saw Vs bandsaw debate because I started out looking at bandsaws a long time ago. My woodwork interest is in turning but I've also started carving so the bandsaw is a good option. However, I've been using a tiny table saw I have to do some work recently and can see lots of benefits there too. My turning mate has a bandsaw but reckons a table saw would be more useful. I'm going to look at the TS tomorrow and my turning chum is coming down on Tuesday to have a look as well. I'll probably end up buying both  .

Again, thanks for the input, you have been very helpful and I appreciate it.

Brendan

Brendan, I have the tablesaw and a couple of bandsaws too, and for turning I can't recall ever using the table saw.

For turning prep and conversion it would be the bandsaw every time for me, unless you were doing a lot of segmented turning and needed lots af accurate angles cutting.

The tablesaw comes into its own for cutting panels and more accurate dimensioning and angles.

Hope that helps....

Cheers, Paul :D

Thanks for that Paul,

I think a bandsaw would get more use and be more versatile but recently a lot of my cutting has been to do with making moulds and accuracy so the table saw is attractive. There's also the issue of segmenting. I am almost scared to try that because then I'll be talking about planer thicknessers etc and that's another story. One part of me is resisting segmented work but my background in mathematics is making me want to try it and I know, once I start, that my love of maths will quickly rationalise any purchase that has to do with precision and accuracy. And then I'd end up buying planes

So, being as sensible as I can I'm going to look a bandsaws first and table saws second.

I might as well share my other problem. Last night my wife told me off again for NOT buying the machines I want and told me "no more procrastinating, I want to see the machines here this week".

It's a terrible problem to have!

Brendan

Definitely think you need a bandsaw Brendan.

Much more versatile than the TS.

Much more versatile than the TS.

I'm not sure that I am really competent to disagree with that Tom 'cos I don't do turning, but my table saw, with jigs, is used to cut finger joints, tenons, tapers, dadoes and cuts boxes in to two to produce lid and base.

Roy.

You can do all of that with the bandsaw, plus cut curves. It also takes up much less space than the TS. I couldn't be without a TS. But for someone who is mainly a turner. The bandsaw is much more suitable than the TS ever will be.

It also takes up much less space than the TS.

Having both machines I find that the size is not the problem, it's long lengths of timber that cause most problems.
Six ft of timber needs twelve ft of workshop space, which ever machine we use, same with PTs of course.
I often find myself working outside of my shop with the machine just inside!

Different subject Tom. Bad backs and the pain they can cause.
On Thursday morning my wife and I received a call from my daughter, she had been taken into hospital the previous evening with such pain in her back that she was convulsing and had to be strapped down till they could get a Morphine drip into her, and they had diagnosed her as suffering from spinal cancer!
My wife and I were in the throws of putting the waterproof finish on our kitchen roof and could not get to Telford till Friday.
My daughter kept us upto date through out the day.
They X-rayed her back and could find nothing. They performed a battery of other tests then ordered a full body scan as they anticipated a brain tumour.
That evening a cancer nurse spent two hrs with her explaining everything to her concerning her family and her prospects.
All this without finding a tumour but based on the amount of pain and the amount of Morphine required to control it.
On Friday morning we set out on the 130 mile trip to Telford, and as you can imagine it was not a happy journey. Shortly after we passed through Aberystwydd we received another call.
The original medical staff had finished for the week and a new doc took on her case, and immediately identified a collapsed vertebra!
So if anyone questions you in the future about the pain a back injury can cause, tell 'em that story!

Roy.

Well, Roy. Thanks for putting the fear of god in me. Operation in 10 days

Glad you're the problems with your daughter were not as serious as first thought. I can only imagine the pain for all of you.

Sorry if I upset you Tom, not intended, just an explanation to others of the sort of pain sufferes get.
When the news came in that it was all a mistake, I could have commited murder!

Roy.
