I have a Stanley 60 1/2 , bought new - it was very poorly finished and I had to do a lot of fettling to make it work well. The steel is nice but other than that I don't like it very much.

I think the Axminster one (Rider) you mentioned looks much better.

If funds run to it, get several irons (blades). Then you'll have a sharp one to drop in when the first one goes blunt, without needing to stop immediately.

You could even sharpen them to different angles for different tasks.

Cheers,

E.

I admire your outlook Manx. I'm just starting out with the woodworking too. It can be hard going knowing where to start. Quick break from planes because you mentioned chisels.
A while back lidles ran some chisels for a week. Someone famous ( Paul Sellers?) tested them and reckoned for the price they were mustard. Sure enough I was in lidles, got sucked in and got a set. They've been in the drawer ever since. Pm me your address and I'll send them to you. I'd rather they were being used tbh. Just don't expect them rapido delivery. I'm not the greatest organiser and I tend to be working or looking after the kids. Remember the white rabbit from Alice in wonderland..
Anyway back on topic.
Cheers

I have a couple of Qs.
1. Do you want to be able to face plane to smoothish finish from sawn?
2 can you move the duff arm at all at least to put it on the top of a front knob to apply a little down pressure, even if just by weight?

If yes to the above (maybe even 1. yes 2. no, then maybe a wooden plane about the size of a #6 but with a bailey frog etc maybe what you want.

The longer length will give you better control to use it one handed and hte wooden body less tiring to use

if I did this right re pics they should be viewable here. sorry for basic pics but just to give basic idea as such. would also suggest having the bench higher maybe around 38"

Hello m8?
My 'duff' hand will only gave me robotic movement!! The motions is so slow..I've tried to mimic the motions of using a plane!! But I would need faster movement..like when I tried a hammer!! Too slow and no impact..

I did see Paul's Lidle vid about the chilcels lol
I actually bought 3 from wilki's a few days ago and dressed the properly!! Mind took a few hrs..but the result was good..but not nuff practice to see if they hold the edge!
Under a fiver!! They don't even say what type of metal they are!! Don't think 01 steel be that cheap!!
I know I'm just hoping!!! Lol
Thanks for the offer pal but I've got my chisels sorted...and a few from my friend that sharpening them for me, I appreciate it.

Manx - take up the man's offer. There is nothing at all wrong with these tools - in fact they are as good as most on the market, without paying silly money.
Thx Phil
I've just message him.
I've got about 8 odd chisels now all different sizes.
I know what u saying..you can not get enough tools lol.

A sightly off the wall thought - could a plane be modified by adding a forearm or elbow rest at the rear.

The front would be held as normal and the rest elbow/arm rest would allow the plane to be guided and body weight used. May be easiest to modify a wood block plane where the rear wooden handle could easily be replaced with the forearm rest.

Terry

Thx Terry
I think I mention just before, I can't move the duff hand fast nuff! And not grip.
Tbh this arm is only use for wearing a watch n my ring one

Great responds guys,
For I'm not much practice with plane.
I'm thinking so far my edges are bad at the end grain, not the face of the grain.
By the look of my cuts are getting better and true with the tenon saw and a rip saw.
So buying a standard block plane will help me with the planing with the grain..but not good at planing against the grain.
If I buy a low angle one I can at least practice getting the joints getting better..
Let you know what I decide.

Another option with a smoothing plane is to make or have made a weighted block to replace the front knob. Forty plus years ago when I was a teenager there was a man in his nineties who lived in the flat above me. He had been a cabinet maker all his working life and one item of his kit he passed on to me was a lead block shaped to fit in place of the knob which was clad in mahogany. looks a lot like the front end of a infil plane. Was made to allow the use of the plane with one hand while the other is used to hold the work piece presumably for fitting furniture on site etc.

I tried the little Record 043 plough plane one handed and it worked fine.

That was exactly the idea I came up with today after pondering about this problem on and off for half a week. I think it would work even better on a number 5 sized plane where the rear handle is above the sole.

Stanley No.78 is also usable one handed for cutting rebates.

Block plane the only one I know of designed for one hand use. They all have the rounded cap iron thing to fit in your palm and a button for the fore finger.
Various shapes and sizes. My favourite is the 220.
And yes a 78 could be good.
I'd wonder about going the green woodwork way - adze is one handed and would do a lot of pre planing work. Axe, knife etc?
