Silly Question about acquiring sawdust (maybe)

Hi Everyone.

I'm not sure if my post may be considered a breech of the forum rules or not, as its not strictly woodworking related, though it sort of is..

Basically. I am a modeller, scale models and scenery etc, that sort of thing, and I am looking to make my own materials as the ones from the shops are pretty expensive.

For anyone here who also has experience with models etc, there is a material you use for the ground cover usually refered to as, flock or scatter to simulate grass etc. Basically I have a large project I want to do and to buy the materials from a model shop would be way beyond my budget.

And now my question..

Do you know where I can obtain large amounts (bin bag full) of sawdust, I have looked for local woodworking places in my area (warrington) but cant seem to find anywhere.

so Im not sure if there is anywhere you can buy large quantities of it?

I would be grounding it up even further and adding colour to it etc to make a powdery sort of flock etc.

Hope this questions ok, and for the record I would love to have a go at woodworking also and I have always wanted a lathe, but simply dont have room as I dont have any spare rooms or a workshop etc. but I can appreciate the joy involved in creating a masterpiece like im sure everyone does or will on this forum.

We as woodworkers always have bin bags of sawdust to get rid of. If you tell us where you are, I'm sure a member local to you would be only to hay to oblige.

edit: just re-read your post and notice you said you are in Warrington.

I'm sure there are loads of members around that area who could help you out. If not, you could go a bit further (Leeds) and I will offload you some.

wow!. That was a fast reply .. I couldn't believe it, but I can understand why this is such a popular forum Thanks for your offer Jay, I dont drive though I do have access to transport, I just had a look at the map and it seems you are the other side of the coast from me. it would make for a nice day out though im not sure how long the drive would be..

Yeah, I have looked around my local area, but I havnt been able to find any mills or anything locally, in a sense thats what bought me here because its most logical place to source some sawdust and I wasnt sure if sawdust was seen as a valuable commodity also by the woodworking industry etc, as I know its used for hampster bedding and wot not..

I would be willing to pay though as I think its only a fair exchange.

It keeps me out of mischeif.. much to my girflfriends dismay as they eventually end up all over the house :roll: , but as im sure all of you on these forums can appreciate, ya gotta have the space you need to create the things you love to do..(thats why I could probably do with an aircraft hangar...)

:? I'l never forget when I had everything laid out on the floor in the lounge ( i was building an airfield diorama of wwII battle of britain) and was seriously running out of space so the floor was my only option.. well... I stood up and tripped over my laptop lead..hands palm outwards as I hurtled towards the floor. trying to desperatly to find a space to land but with so much of the floor covered there was no option..

The rest is history.. it certainly looked like it had been bombed after that,

Or how about a tea/coffee shop for grouts.

Thanks for all your replies, hey that is getting nearer Liverpool, I actually managed to find some addresses last night (weird Ive been looking for ages then suddenly find some last night, must be all the woodworking energy) So I will give them a call tommorrow and keep you all posted. Thanks. I will let you know and pm you if needs be, My girlfeind is from Bootle..so were often up that way anyway.. regarding milkes question.

Shes a poet and writer, so she only gets mad at me when my models invade her space, but she doesnt need much (she says) so she doesnt mind being surrounded by wwII planes, tanks, armour etc...I guess shes used to it..

Ive managed to take a couple of pics today of some stuff yet to be finished, theyre all bits that will make up a diorama eventually, but theres still things to do on them, like adding the windscreens, and more weathering, small details etc, Theyre all 1/72nd scale. Also the pics arnt great because my mothers borrowed my good camera and im not used the one I used.. anyway..for your perusal...

I will upload the finished diorama when its all done and I have my decent camera back, there will be quite a few aircraft too. So I got plenty to do over xmas, Cant wait to get the sawdust now and get flockking...

The green stuff on this is the flock I was on about making with the sawdust, on top of that will added a staticly charged sort of fibre which stands up on its end to simulate grass.

Still needs rigging wire, and arials etc

I'm still learning, and I have a lot more, just things are kinda disorganised at the moment. with each one I do I know I can improve the next one, and I always learn new stuff along the way, I always look back and think.. doh!.. I should of done it like this or that, or tried this, but thats what I love about it, your always learning from it and from mistakes etc, getting better and better with each peice.

I guess thats not too disimilar to working with wood, and crafting furniture etc, all the different tools, finishes, preparations, drying times, etc, etc. a constant process of improvement on the way to a masterpiece..(sort of thing)
