A friend of mine wants me to make him a few signs - names engraved in wooden plaques. Is there an easy way to do this for a non carver? I know Trend do letter and number templates, but they are a little expensive for a favour. Is there a less expensive alternative?

TIA Froggy.

I think Rutlands have a set that's fairly well priced for routing. In signs I have made in the past I use a print out from computer and stick it in and just router to the lines.

This is one of my favourites from a few years back, routed and finished with chisels.

Tim,

I've not done this myself but I have heard others complain about the Rutlands template system so that might be worth avoiding or at least seeking advice from those who have tried them.

Hope all is well with you.

Bob

Wow Superunknown that's fantastic =D> Unfortunately I don't think I have the skill to do something like that. How long did it take you to get to that level? How long did it take to do the sign? Did you finish with standard chisels or carving chisels?

Simon - I may have a go at making my own templates one day, but there's a bit of a time issue here. The guy has a carp fishing lake that opens soon and he wants a sign for each of his swims (pitches) before he opens. With everything else I have on at the moment spending time on making termplates might not be an option.

Hi Bob how are you? I hope alls well with you. I heard the same thing about Rutlands - think I'll give that a miss. Are you coming over this year? I've loads of machines that need a tweek or two

i made one for the door of my shop.
i drew a backplate on 10mm ply and cut it on the bandsaw
then i went on
dafont.com
and found a font i liked and printed what i wanted (mikes shed or something)
then i cut the paper words out and drew around then onto thin ply then cut them out on the bandsaw and used a scroll saw to do tight curves and inside letters.
then paint or stain the ply
