Hello all. I decided with the help of SWMBO that we needed a small table, AKA a side table. I used up some bits of mahogany that I had left. They were originaly the shelves from Salford University Library 
They did a refurb a couple of years ago and replaced everything with with grey metal racks. My sister works there and told my Dad. He sometimes does a bit of woodwork and so he thought he would have a few pieces that were going on the bonfire! :shock: I was not into woodwork then and didn't even know about it, he said that he could have filled a 40ft container with the stuff but he could not see a need for it!!! . if only I had known....
Anyway the few pieces that he but in the back of his car I turned into this. Hopefuly I have picked up a few things and for the 5th thing I have produced I am fairly pleased with it. Its nice to be working with hardwood.
First I glued 3 pieces of the shelves together with biscuits and PVA
Then I added some strips to the end grain with double width biscuits (No glue) and screws at each end to allow for expansion.
Then I removed all the old varnish with a ROS working through 80, 120, 180, 220 grit paper.
Then I routed a bit of an edge all the way round the top.
Bit of a chunk came out when routing :evil: Will have to be filled with a piece.
Next up was the legs/base. I cut out all the legs in one go with 4 pieces stuck together with carpet tape using the bandsaw.
Made a lot of Orange dust in the workshop. I was wearing a mask, but I think I need some better extraction for routing.
Cut my first tenons by hand. I cut of the top part of the tenon to give the cross rails a bit more strength. I dont know what this is called.
Not a bad fit for a first attempt
The mortises, I drilled then chiseled them square.
I had some help in the workshop
Starting the glue up. I did it upside down so that I could use the bench as the square to work from. I used the just installed bench dogs to help with the clamping.
A few coats of Danish Oil
Leave it to dry for a few days...
And its all done!
