Hello all. I decided with the help of SWMBO that we needed a small table, AKA a side table. I used up some bits of mahogany that I had left. They were originaly the shelves from Salford University Library :) They did a refurb a couple of years ago and replaced everything with with grey metal racks. My sister works there and told my Dad. He sometimes does a bit of woodwork and so he thought he would have a few pieces that were going on the bonfire! I was not into woodwork then and didn't even know about it, he said that he could have filled a 40ft container with the stuff but he could not see a need for it!!! . if only I had known....
Anyway the few pieces that he but in the back of his car I turned into this. Hopefuly I have picked up a few things and for the 5th thing I have produced I am fairly pleased with it. Its nice to be working with hardwood.

First I glued 3 pieces of the shelves together with biscuits and PVA

Then I added some strips to the end grain with double width biscuits (No glue) and screws at each end to allow for expansion.

Then I removed all the old varnish with a ROS working through 80, 120, 180, 220 grit paper.

Then I routed a bit of an edge all the way round the top.

Bit of a chunk came out when routing  Will have to be filled with a piece.

Next up was the legs/base. I cut out all the legs in one go with 4 pieces stuck together with carpet tape using the bandsaw.

Made a lot of Orange dust in the workshop. I was wearing a mask, but I think I need some better extraction for routing.

Cut my first tenons by hand. I cut of the top part of the tenon to give the cross rails a bit more strength. I dont know what this is called.

Not a bad fit for a first attempt

The mortises, I drilled then chiseled them square.

I had some help in the workshop

Starting the glue up. I did it upside down so that I could use the bench as the square to work from. I used the just installed bench dogs to help with the clamping.

Good job ! Lovely wavey grain there looks like sapele

Very nice - love the shape of the legs/feet!

"Haunched tenons" ?

And lovely to see your little helpers in there (hopefully enjoying themselves  )

Andrew

Lovely piece of work Lee. I love these WIP postings. Glad to see your workshop has the really essential equipment - kettle in the corner for a brew! :)

Lee,

Good looking table. :D
Good pictures, keep posting them.\:D/
My grand children like to go out in my shop, I have ended up with scrap bits of ply nailed to the saw horse and stepup.(hammer) (hammer) #-o
Good timber, how much more has your dad got tucked away?

Nice table and that Danish Oil does give it a nice finish =D>
Ps JFC you are right it is sapele

Proper job, Lee. =D> Better make that dust extraction a priority if the sproglets are going to be there much - SWMBO will have a fit if they're caked in dust, never mind any other consideration...

Cheers, Alf

Lee, nice piece. It's very satisfying to use reclaimed timber isn't it.

I like the shape of the legs too

Is that all of it?
I have been making a guitar out of Sapele and its quite different. Its more light pink in colour with a much more open grain. Also the wood the table is made of is much heavier than the Sapele.

I have looked at it again and I still think its sapele.
I have just done some small panel to go in an old sapele floor and had the same thing, you must also remember that the sapele on the table is old and the colour will change.
I have also found that some times some timbers can be different in weight ( I have iroko to prove that, all the bits I bought are heavy but for one :? )
:)
