Which shoulder plane would y'all recommend for tenon shoulders?
Obviously the size of tenons varies but I think probably the medium size plane is the best bet...

The contenders:

LN 042

Veritas Medium

Clifton 420

Hi, Calpol

Bigger is better 76 etc, the extra weight helps it to cut, unstoppable force meets a movable object.

Pete

Thanks Pete, I thought the bigger one on a smaller tenon would be a bit unstable, is it more a case of you're better with a big one and a wee one? Aslo what do you mean by 76?

None...get a decent wide chisel for shoulders on tenons. I use a 25mm LN but wider is better. I have the big LN but I never use it for tenons - Rob

I've not used the Clifton but I'd always recommend a Veritas shoulder plane, having used the other two. The Lie-Nielsen cuts very well and all but, those adjustable knobs on the Veritas win it hands-down for me.

While I may be tempted to use a shoulder plane on large tenons, I'd also advise you to use a wide chisel on smaller scaled work, like furniture-making. Shoulder planes can be used for other situations though... Raised and fielded panels being one example. :)

On the strength of David Charlesworths comments that bigger is better I got the large LN shoulder, but never got on with it as it was too heavy for my liking.

I swapped it for the medium Veritas and couldn't be happier.

Ed

I have the LN shown above and also a Clifton 3110, which is a very useful plane. And yes, I have trimmed tenon shoulders with a shoulder plane, also used a chisel, plane feels more accurate to me

Hi, Calpol

A Number 76 shoulder plane preston, record, lie neisen etc.
I use a big one on every thing. The thing to do is to handle them all and see what feels right in your hand, I didn't like the Veritas at all.
I made this one its about 8 inches long and chunky but its the one I reach for.

Either the Veritas which has several nice additions over the other two (I have one (had the large version too untl recently) and it is the best of the bunch you show), or the one in my avatar which is the best plane I have bought!!!

Thanks a'body, plenty to think about there! I've only ever tried the Stanley 92 but felt it was too small for what I wanted... Also I used a chisel at college for shoulders but it's very time consuming, no? I would imagine it's not as accurate either :?:. Maybe that's just me...

Would love the Bridge City job Tony but don't know about £400, could buy the other three nearly for that :?
