Shoulder Plane Question

This is probuably going to get me banned hereabouts

I've been hanging lots of doors and got fed up with taking them down because I could not reach the final 3 inches with my hand plane with them hanging (final fit). Often it just needed a shaving removing, so...............

Warning: Look away now all you tool nuts

........I took a small crappy woody and sawed the front end off. I then screwed a bit of brass (modified half a butt hinge) over the front of the mouth. So in front of the blade there is maybe an eighth of an inch "brass sole".
Works fine so long as you register the rear (remaining) plane sole.

Now you mention that, it reminds me that I've seen "more than one" Bailey chisel plane.
