Should potatoes grow this large?

Yes, just water. Unfortunately if you're growing outside you're at the mercy of everything windblown - up on our allotments only one person this year had success with tomatoes, blight wiped out everyone else's and their potatoes.

Try blight resistant varieties - especially for maincrops. Sarpo Mira seems a good choice round here. The Tomatoes were sick with blight, but the sarpo mira were healthy. Next year I will try blight resistant tomatoes if I can find some.

It doesn't affect me, I'm not even attempting tomatoes outdoors - I've never succeeded - and I doubt I'll want to grow potatoes. This is the first season of the allotment, and I'm going for more disease and pest resistant crops. I hope to get a greenhouse sorted at home next year - I can build a greenhouse/potting shed straight off the kitchen door. This is worth a look -

Looks like a good yield with some fine bakers in there.

Sarpo Mira produce a good yield and resist the blight so they can be left in late to make the most of the last bits of sun. I have already ordered mine for next year.

Yep a couple of the old boys down the allotment set a couple of rows of Sarpo Mira as late as the end of June to give them freshly dug potatoes for Xmas dinner.
This year has been very bad for blight particularly later on so I was really glad I'd opted to take their advise & plant 4 rows of Sarpo, they certainly faired better than my other mids & lates, I've placed my potato order with the allotment society for next year & included some Sarpo, £7.70 for 10kg of seed potatoes is a real bargain
