Its's two inches longer than normal - an inch on the toe, same on the heel.
It changes the look of the plane, as does the Ebony, and adds more weight.

In theory, a shooting board planes length is immaterial as the plane is guided by the board - a longer plane doesn't make for straighter edges. But it felt good to use - I think because of the additional weight.

Will I be making them longer from now on? Probably not, although if you want a longer one I'm happy to do that (no sniggering at the back  ).

Philly - just read your blog - foam tiles will make a big difference and save your dropped tools as well! :)

There's another factor - a longer toe allows a longer run up (or allows more error on the backstroke - if you pull back too far, the toe off the plane comes off the workpiece!)

My preferred plane (of the ones I own) for shooting (despite owning a Record #T5) is a #6.

Why? Why am I so weak. I tried to resist, but it was no good. I want one!

That is one lovely plane and must be so much more comfortable on a shooting board than my LN 62. So now I guess I must save some pennies. One question for you though, is a wooden plane really heavy enough for a shooting board? The 62 works well probably due to its mass. I would not have thought a wooden plane could have anywhere near the mass of a metal one. Or am I missing something?
