I'd give another vote to the LV LAJ - I've been using it a lot in the last week on and off a shooting board making some special boxes. I bought one after a recent trip to Wilton  and I love it. I also have an LV LAS which can also be used for shooting however I prefer the weight of the LAJ for larger pieces. I did try Robs LN #9 and didn't get on with it. Worth bearing in mind that the LN #9 (£300) can only do one thing - allegedly very well - whereas the LV LAJ (£210) as the name suggests is more of an all rounder. With one you may find that you won't immediately need to shell out for a #4 or #7. I guess at the end of the day, if you can, you should try some of the different options before parting with your cash. One final thought, whatever plane you buy, from £5 to £500, if you can't sharpen it well it will be useless to you.

John - agreed. Better to have it square from the start. And I lost track of the times I did the old "just a little bit more......no, back a bit......back a bit more.....d'oh, too much". Until I had a Philly mitre that is! Wish he hadn't gone and introduced that skew mitre - looks very tempting. Fiend.

Cheers

Karl,

I was looking at a Gordon A55, for a wooden plane btw. It can also be used as a scraper I am told, by putting in the blade and wedge at the front of the throat.

Sounds useful does that!

Please don't tempt me into giving Philly a ring.. I have spent 2008 and 2009 plane allowances already!
Cheers

Steve - glad you liked the LA jack...fantastic all rounder IMO - Rob

Well newt, I haven't used one at all; not been to a show for some time! But I will bear in mind what you say, when I am ready for another fight with SWIMBO!

I have a Veritas foreplane. That's pretty nifty and the LN bevel up jack with the adjustable mouth has done everything I've asked of it so far.

Cheers

Plenty of good advice here. If you ultimately decide to buy a LV low angle jack plane, I still have a completely unused, box fresh specimen for sale.

Just PM me.

LV LAJ only plane needed in the wksp if funds are tight.

Sorry new to this. Whats a LV LAJ ? I haven't picked up on the lingo yet.

Mark,

Here is my LV LAJ on a small shooting board.

I was making some small boxes at that time, the thread is here.
It is a very useful plane and I agree with newt, if I could only have one plane it would that one.

Not too far away then, can always give me a shout if you want to talk planes, don't have too many fancy planes but I do have a lovely LV BUS if you want to see a diference between that and an ordinary bench plane

Hi Mark.

LV = Lee Valley (sometimes referred to as Veritas) a Canadian manufacturer of woodworking tools.

LAJ = Low Angle Jack

LN = Lie Nielsen an American manufacturer of woodworking tools.

HTH (Hope this helps)

Steve

Ah, in that case a BUS is a Bevel Up Smoother, aka the Kylie Minogue of the plane world. And no, I don't need to get out more

Thanks Steve.

Clear Now.

I've heard of Veritas but not Lee Valley, I thought they made cheese? Heard of Lie Neilson too. Its the abreviations I stuggle with. Feel a bit like a 80 Year old thats learning How to text like them young uns!! Apologies any 80 year olds, its a new technology thing.

Lee Valley make Veritas planes. Not sure how they arrived at the Valley bit, but the Lee is the owner's surname.

Now you know ;)

Bit late in on this one, but I would counsel against buying anything like a Bailey no 6 or 7 on ebay, unless the seller has a good record and can give you assurances about flatness. There are an awful lot of banana shaped Bailey pattern planes out there and if you get one it will take forever to flatten and you may not succeed. If you want to go down the s/h Bailey route it is much better to buy from a secondhand tool shop; take a good straightedge with you and check them out yourself.

You may pay a bit more but at least you will know what you are getting. Of course, you will have to throw the blade away and buy something decent and may well end up asking yourself whether you would have been better saving up for an LN, Veritas or Clifton. Even some of these illustrious products can be less than acceptably flat, but at least you can take it back and ask for another.

I only have my smoother and my Jack that I used to use for site work 20 years ago, they do everything and are the only planes I use on my various shooting boards, so if you have a plane, then it is good enough for your shooting board work, any will do.
Derek.

Thanks all

I just cant justify LV at the moment. I wonder how much use it will get.
