Plainly it's a BU plane and the blade is being prepared for scraping

What? Don't you people ever "ride" your planes on the microbevel? It saves a lot of wear on the sole, so you only have to lap the blade (once a year). It's kind of like using David Charlesworth's ruler trick while you plane. You really should try it out.
