I used to finish the whole blade at 45 deg, but since trying DC's idea of grinding at around 35 odd deg and then honing at 45 have not gone back. Burr can be quickly removed by rehone at 45 deg and new burr formed several times before regrind (Tormek etc) is required. Crown for someting like LN scraper plane is also easier to form as you're not working on full blade thickness, just the sharpening bevel.

A dimensioned / marked scrap MDF jig goes in the vice with the scraper plane blade so correct burnish angle is reached when burnisher touches the MDF - ensures nice even burr.
